Robert Abel, age 75, of North Huntingdon, passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at his home.  He was born May 20, 1942 in New Kensington, PA, a son of the late Joseph and Katherine Nowacki Abel.

Robert was a retired veteran of the US Navy with 20 years of service, as a Master Chief Boiler Technician, then later was an independent inspector and expeditor of rotating equipment.  He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 33 Greensburg, American Legion Post 981 Greensburg and enjoyed traveling with his wife to Florida and New York in their motor home.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Abel.  He is survived by his wife, Barbara Torpey Abel; sons, Michael Abel and his wife, Trisha, Robert Abel; stepsons, Jeffery Platt and his wife, Michelle, Jody Platt and his wife, Ashley; daughter, Catharine Guthrie and her husband, Brad; stepdaughter, Paula Driscoll and her husband, Bill; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Bud Light.  Friends will be received at the James W. Shirley Funeral Home, 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon, PA on Friday from 3-7 p.m.  Interment will be private in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, PA.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.  www.shirleyfuneralhome.com.
