Irene Hionis (Eirineé Katsenou), age 92, was called to her heavenly home on August 30, 2024, in White Oak, PA surrounded by her family. Born on February 2, 1932, in Kefalonia, Greece, she embodied the virtues of a life lived with kindness, humility and gratitude, and a profound reverence for her faith.
Irene was employed for 15 years of her life at Sabins China Factory. Irene’s unwavering faith was a cornerstone of her existence, finding solace and strength in her worship at the Annunciation of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church in White Oak, PA and in her homeland at Agia Paraskevi and Agios Geracimos in Kefalonia.
Irene’s hands were rarely still, as she expressed her love through the art of cooking and baking, nurturing her garden, and caring for her beloved dogs. She would always be ready to feed her friends and family with her delicious food and her warm generosity. Her travels to Kefalonia were journeys of gratitude, reconnecting with her roots and the divine beauty of her birthplace.
Irene was a beacon of maternal love, leaving behind a legacy of faith and love in her daughters, Theodora Hionis and Stamatia (Thomas) Milburn; her granddaughters, Kristina, Irene Milburn, and many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her grand dogs, Steely, Louey, and Jasper, who were cherished companions in her walk of life.
Irene now joins her beloved husband, Geracimos Hionis, her parents, Yianni and Stamo Katsenou, and her siblings, Kristina, Maria, Geracimos, Yianni, and Phillipi, who have gone before her to prepare a place in the everlasting kingdom.
Family and friends will gather at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, Inc., 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412-678-6177) on Monday, September 2, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. (The Traditional Greek Orthodox Trisagion Service will begin at 2:00 p.m.). There will be an additional gathering period at the Annunciation of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, 1128 Summit Street, White Oak, PA 15131, on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. A burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
