Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | February 17, 2025

In loving memory of Nelda Mae Newman Renner, age 92, of Dravosburg, PA, who died on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Nelda was born in Duquesne, PA, on March 25, 1932, to the late Calvert Omar and Martha Wilson Newman.
She acquired both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees at the University of Pittsburgh. Nelda personified the spirit of a child and used this gift to lift the minds of her students throughout her career as an educator. Her passion for education guided her to become the first female Director of Vocational Education in western Pennsylvania and enabled her to be at the forefront of educational development with articulation between the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) and Penn State University.
Nelda’s youthful spirit continued throughout her life which included gardening at her own home until her final days. When not enjoying her flowers, Nelda could be found among the congregation at Amity Presbyterian Church in Dravosburg or among her family and friends.
Nelda is survived by her daughter, Lucinda N Pritchard (Raymond) and son Richard Von Renner (Vera). She was a cherished grandmother to the children of Lucinda, Elizabeth Mae Pritchard, DVM (Rahul Sawhney, DO) and Andrew Phillip Pritchard.
Nelda embodied the famous words of Aldous Huxley, “the secret to genius is to carry the spirit of a child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm”. She radiated an enthusiasm and love for her work, family, friends, congregation, and students that continued until her final day.
Should family and friends desire, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704 Hagerstown, MD 21741.
