Esther Suls Newberg, originally from Baltimore MD, died on Sunday, August 3, 2025 at the age of 86. She was born on February 2, 1939 and was the daughter of the late Harry and Edith Selis Suls.
Esther Newberg was many things: a mother, a friend, a worrier, a truth-teller, a human alarm system, and a one-woman Yelp reviewer/commentator of life itself. She will be missed terribly, remembered fondly, and talked about forever - just the way she would have wanted. Her cooking was m'mutza for a Jewish mother, but her chocolate chip cookies were better than any Crumbl cookie available today.
The Newberg family would like to extend its deepest thanks for the love, support and patience of her friends who we consider to be true extended family members. This includes Dr. Ellen Dillinger, Jeanne Baird, Drs. Arnold Friedman and Robin Santhouse, Joe Greiber and Bill Rudolph, all located in Pittsburgh. This group was always there for Esther.
More recently, the great caregivers at Schenley Gardens Assisted Living and nurses and doctors at Select Specialty Hospital inside of UPMC Montefiore were incredibly caring in these last 8 months.
Esther is survived by her children, Eric (Katrina Karlson) Newberg of Barrington, IL; Mark Newberg of Pittsburgh, PA; and Janet (Mark) Waggoner of Hingham, MA; grandchildren, Georgia Waggoner; and Ruby Waggoner; and twin sister, Elaine (the late Robert) Katz of Bethesda, MD.
In addition to her parents, Esther is preceded in death by her two brothers, Larry Suls, Daniel Suls as well as her late husband Dr. Jay A Newberg.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, Inc., 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA, 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412 678 6177) from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. officiated by Rabbi Sharyn Henry. A burial will follow at Temple B’nai Cemetery, 725 Center Street, Versailles, PA 15132.
