Carlene (Connelly) Cavanaugh, 83, of Ocala, Fla., died Monday, Dec. 21, 2015. She was born April 8, 1932, in McKeesport, a daughter of the late Patrick Aloysius and Christine Erda Weiskircher Connelly. Carlene was a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and began her teaching career in home economics at the McKeesport Area High School. She was also an instructor with the Pittsburgh Adult Education program before pursuing a career as a real estate agent in the West Mifflin area.
In 1973, Carlene moved overseas with her family and taught English at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. After three years, she returned to the United States and settled in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where she again sold real estate. In 1987, she moved to Port Jefferson, N.Y., and taught home economics at J. Taylor Finley Middle School in Huntington, while pursuing her master’s degree at Stony Brook University in New York. She remained there until she retired to Ocala. She is survived by daughters, Stacy J. Cavanaugh, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Kathleen (Alar) Elken, of Naples, Fla., and Christine (Scott) Altman, of Rockville Centre, N.Y.; grandchildren, Andrew (Sarah) Elken, Erik Elken, Rachel, Jacob and Daniel Altman; and great-granddaughter, Anne Mai Elken. She was preceded in death by her only sibling, Patricia Anne Connelly Striffler who died Aug. 30, 2015. Friends will be received from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, at STRIFFLERS OF WHITE OAK CREMATION AND MORTUARY SERVICES, 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412-678-6177). Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Monday at St. Angela Merici Church, with Father Kevin Dominik officiating. Interment will follow.
