William Snyder Funeral Home

Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | January 11, 2018

Dorothy J. “Dee Jay” (Wright) Becker, of Westmoreland City, went to be with her Lord, Wednesday, January 10, 2018. She was born September 9, 1934 in Westmoreland City, a daughter of the late William Henry and Eleanor (Wolf) Wright. She was a great wife, wonderful mother, and loving grandma to 4 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, and 3 great grandchildren. Dee Jay graduated from North Huntingdon High School, Class of 1953. While at North Huntingdon High she was a member of the marching band, never having missed a parade or half time show performing on her clarinet. She could be heard rooting for the “Bulldogs”. During her junior and senior years she was selected for the Westmoreland County Orchestra. She marched for the Manor Fireman’s Band until it disbanded in the 1950’s. The day before high school graduation she was hired as a clerk typist for Westinghouse Airbrake Company and worked there until 1959. She took ten years off to raise her two children.

When they started school she was hired by Norwin School District first as a substitute cafeteria worker working her way up to cook/manager at Hillcrest Elementary School where she retired following the 1996-1997 school year after 28 years’ service. Following retirement Dee Jay became a very active member of Manor Presbyterian Church and was president of the Women’s Association for many many years. Dee Jay was a member of the church choir and enjoyed the fun. She liked to say she was a fill in voice not a soloist but she could keep time really well. The last months of her life were rough. The loss of her wonderful husband Carl “Lefty” Becker after only 59 years of marriage followed a few months later by the death of her canine Lady B. were tough. With her children living so far away Dee Jay said if it had not been for her faith, friends at church, along with her sister in law she would not have been able to go on. In addition to her parents and her husband she was preceded in death by a brother Jack William Wright in 1992. Surviving are her children Timothy A. Becker and his wife Cindy of VA, and Kim Ann Brown and her husband Floyd of Dover; her grandchildren Alyssa (Dustin) Becker, Joel Daugherty (Jenna Patison), Timothy M. (Samantha) Becker, Adam K. (Savanna) Becker, Morgan and Quinn Hicks; her great grandchildren K. J. Haga, and Andi and Jackson Brown; sister in law Patty Lou Wright; a niece and two nephews; and extended family Jason and Katie Brown. At Dee Jay’s request there will be no viewing or services. A memorial contribution can be made to Manor Presbyterian Church P.O. Box 545, Manor, PA 15665. The William Snyder Funeral Home Inc., Irwin, is in charge of arrangements.
