Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | April 11, 2016
Marjory A. (Kinney) Williams, 73, of Glassport, died Thursday, April 7, 2016. She was the daughter of the late John Shirley and Margaret (Morsey) Shirley. She is survived by brothers, David Shirley, of Bend, Ore., and Gregg Shirley, of Glassport, whom she supported with love and guided for several years until her passing; stepdaughter, Vallerie Williams, of New York; stepson, Gregory Williams, of New Fairfield, Conn.; nephew, Wayne Shirley, of Forest Grove, Ore.; and great-niece, Kelsie Shirley, whom she cherished and often referred to as the child she never had. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Williams.
She would call him her "Sunday School Sweetheart," as they met at Glassport Methodist Church when they were 3 years old. Marj was an early advocate of a "sustainable lifestyle," working at a small farm in southern Ohio and later gardening and raising crops adjacent to the national forest in Warren County, Pa. She wanted to join her husband as a volunteer fireman, but they were not accepting women, so Marj became trained and certified as an EMT, which allowed her to join the fire department. She lived for many years near Bowling Green State University, where she earned a doctorate in English literature. She loved gardening, which moved her to study and become certified as a master gardener. She taught seminars on gardening and cooking, and she even conducted one on herbs, as they were referenced in medieval literature. If you ever wanted to strike up a conversation with Marj, just ask her about how the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates or Penguins were doing. You would get a detailed and passionate opinion. You would also have a good friend to talk to into the future. Religion was very important to her. She was an active member of St. John Byzantine Catholic Church, Munhall. Along with her studies, she felt this church helped her find her ethnic roots. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at WOJCIECHOWSKI FUNERAL HOME, Glassport, where a funeral blessing will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, followed by a Liturgy at 10 a.m., with the Very Rev. Dennis Bogda. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to her church, the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society or the Glassport Community Food Pantry.
