Gene C. Opfer, age 71, of Forward Twp., passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Allegheny General Hospital. He was a member of Bethesda United Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth. A former retail manager for Sam's Club and Dollar General, he opened the first Sam's Club in Pennsylvania in York. He was also a school bus driver for Pennsylvania Coach Lines. An avid car enthusiast, he enjoyed building and racing Volkswagens and was a member of the Mon Valley RC Club of Cedar Creek. He was also a history buff, especially of the Revolutionary and Civil wars. Born December 30, 1948 in McKeesport, he was a son of the late Raymond F. and Elizabeth Opfer. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia Opfer; daughter, Joy (Peter Larsen) Opfer of Pittsburgh; grandson, Otto Larsen; brothers, Raymond "Terry" (Cindy) Opfer of Forward Twp. and David  (Dorothy) Opfer of Washington; also, nieces and nephews. There is no visitation. A Celebration of Life will take place graveside at Round Hill Cemetery, Elizabeth Twp., in the summer of 2021. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, Four Gateway Center, 444 Liberty Avenue, Suite 1300, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
