Elizabeth “Jean” Ponitz, originally from Wilmerding, earned her angel wings at St. Anne’s Home on Monday, October 24, 2022. She was born in Wall, PA on December 31, 1928, a daughter of the late Michael and Mary Arendas. Jean, as she was called by her family and friends, worked in retail and offered fashion advice to her many customers at Lane Bryant, Caren Charles, and Pappagallo at the Monroeville Mall. At age 93 she continued to read fashion magazines for the latest trends. She also enjoyed doing word search puzzles and would keep her family busy purchasing additional puzzle books for her. She was a member of St. Aloysius Church, now known as St. Joseph the Worker parish and a graduate of Westinghouse Memorial High School in Wilmerding.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, James A. Ponitz, three brothers, William, Norman, and Eugene Arendas, and three sisters, Olga Rullo, Marian Begala, and Pauline Arendas. She is survived by her three children, Mary Beth Ponitz, Karen (the late Timothy) Brendlinger, and James (Jamie) Ponitz.  She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Sylvia Arendas, Loretta Szuba, Joanne Ponitz and brother-in-law Edward Ponitz, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the wonderful staff at St. Anne’s Home in Greensburg for providing such loving care and support to our Mother for the past 3 years. Family and friends will be received at the Alfieri Funeral Home, Inc., 201 Marguerite Ave, Wilmerding, PA 15148, 412-824-4332, on Thursday from 2pm to 8pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10AM at St. Jude the Apostle Church of St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Wilmerding.  Interment will be at New St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in North Versailles.
