Strifflers Family Funeral Homes
Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | January 11, 2023
Surrounded by her family and friends, Georgene Monastiere peacefully died on January 9, 2023 at the age of 79. Georgene was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 3, 1943 and moved with her family to Southern California while she was in high school.
She was very proud of her nursing career; graduating from St. Joseph’s College of Nursing in San Francisco, California, and still remains close with many of her “Class of 1966” nursing classmates. Georgene’s nursing career started in San Francisco, and after a stint in the Peace Corps in Columbia, she moved to the Pittsburgh area. Georgene earned her Master of Science in Nursing Degree, and at the time of her retirement over 20 years ago, was the Director of Education at Jefferson Hospital in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. Georgene was an avid reader; well known at the local library and greatly loved being part of a monthly book club led by her dear friend Kathy Rizza. For the past three years, she was a member of a Rosary weekly zoom group led by her niece Christine Tarver. Both groups will greatly miss her! Georgene loved to travel and capturing the memories in photographs. She enjoyed two grand road trips with her dear cousin Rosie Hardenburger the first in 2019 logging over 4400 miles and included a spontaneous side detour to visit Georgene’s brother Frank, and in 2021 exploring Arizona and New Mexico! Her last travel adventure was in May 2022 to the Hawaiian Islands – the highlight being her great-niece Holly Tarver’s college graduation in Oahu, and then spending a second week with family in Kauai. Georgene would like to thank the dedicated nurses and staff at the Jefferson, AHN Cancer Institute, and Health at Home Hospice who compassionately cared for her over the last two years. Georgene is survived by her sister Marie (Ronald) Derenzi of South San Francisco, California; her sister-in-law Joanne Monastiere of Bozeman, Montana; nieces Karen (James) Guglielmoni, Christine (Damon) Tarver and Sierra Monastiere; and great nieces Gina (Ian) Qualls, Holly Tarver and Vanessa Tarver; her Great Aunt Fran Tundis and Great Uncle Frank Tundis. She also has many cousins and friends who she is grateful to have had in her life. She is also survived by her housemate and friend of over 45 years, Diane Massenburg. Georgene is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Angelina Monastiere, and her brother Frank Monastiere. Georgene will be inurned at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma, California. Celebrations of Georgene’s life will be held in Pennsylvania and California later in 2023. Arrangements are being handled by Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, Inc., 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412-678-6177).
