Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | October 20, 2016

Walter J. Mandella "Spike", age 82 of McKeesport, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at his home. Born August 28, 1934 in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Walter C. and Regina (Liebold) Mandella, and loving husband of Shirley (Obusek) Mandella for nearly 55 years. Spike worked for US Steel National Works and also worked for Continental Can Company in West Mifflin. He devoted many years as a youth baseball coach in McKeesport, and was active with the American Legion Baseball League and a scout for the Philadelphia Phillies. Spike's greatest joy was his time spent at Glendale Lake near Prince Gallitzin State Park, where he loved to spend time fishing and enjoying the mountains. He cherished his time there so much that he eventually made it his second home from spring through fall. Spike will be remembered for his unique sense of humor, and his one-liners will be missed by many! In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Daniel (Erica) Mandella of White Oak; daughter, Terri (Scott) Pollock of White Oak; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Stephanie Mandella, Emily, Stephen, Matthew, and Sarah Mandella, and Hunter and Samantha Pollock; also many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Larry (surviving wife, Wendy) Mandella; and brother, Charles Mandella. Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Saturday, October 22, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until time of Funeral Service at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
