John "Jack" Dennis Burkett, 97, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2023. He was born December 24, 1925 in Charleroi and was the son of the late Lloyd and Julia (Sigmond) Burkett. Jack was a member of Central Highlands Community United Methodist Church in Elizabeth Township and the USS The Sullivans Destroyer, DD-537 Association. He was a former member of Elizabeth Township Senior Citizens. Jack was a WWII Navy veteran and had served on the USS The Sullivans Destroyer (DD-537) and the USS Riley (DE-579). For his service, he received the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign medal with 6 Stars, the America Area Campaign, the Philippine Liberation Campaign medal with 2 Stars and the WWII Victory Medal. Jack grew up in Clairton and had retired from US Steel Clairton Works as a Millwright.
He is survived by his wife, Mina (Fairbaugh) Burkett, son, Gary (Janet) Burkett of Katy, TX., daughters, Susan Burkett (Anthony) Bertoglio of Centerville, VA., Mary E. (Tim) Walsh of Niceville, FL., and Jonna E. (Stephen) Stoyros of Bethesda, MD., grandchildren, Christopher Burkett of Richmond, TX., Kelly Burkett (Jason) Sullins of Goliad, TX., Christine (Jon Kremer) Bertoglio of Cary, NC., David (Alexandra) Bertoglio of Centerville, VA, Kelly Walsh (Craig) Gerstner of Nashville, TN., Eileen Walsh (Andrew) Lister and Anna Walsh of Denver, CO., Max (Kim) Stoycos of Gaithersburg, MD., and Hunter (Claire) Stoycos of North Bethesda, MD., 9 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie (Bennett) Burkett, and sisters, Betty (Burkett) Baynham and Helen (Burkett) Bartko. Friends are welcome Tuesday, July 25, 2023 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Gilbert Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 6028 Smithfield Street, Boston, Elizabeth Township. (412) 751-5000 Drew J. Interment with Military Honors will be at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at 1:30 pm.
