Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | November 21, 2023

Dr. George Constantine Sotereanos, DDS, born September 12, 1930 and died November 18, 2023, was the third son of Greek immigrants Constantine and Marcella Sotereanos, originally from Vrontados, Isle of Chios.  He leaves behind a rich legacy, including three children: Constantine Sotereanos, MD, Nicholas Sotereanos, MD, and Anastasia Sotereanos, BS, as well as six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Born in McKeesport, PA, George's journey began at age seven, when he started working as a grocery boy, contributing to his family's livelihood.  He excelled academically, graduating top of his class from McKeesport High School, where he was later honored in their Hall of Fame. George's relentless work ethic continued through his years at the University of Pittsburgh.  While working full-time night shifts at the National Tube steel mill, he earned his BS in Chemistry in just three years, again finishing first in his class. His pursuit of excellence led him to the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry.  Balancing full-time work at Koppers lab as a chemist, he graduated at the top of his class, followed by a residency in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at West Penn and Allegheny General Hospital.

Demonstrating his commitment to service, Dr. Sotereanos volunteered during the Korean War, treating facial trauma as a surgeon in a MASH hospital. Over his 30-year career at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Sotereanos specialized in oral maxillofacial deformities, impacting both children and adults.  He authored over 90 peer-reviewed articles and a seminal textbook, "Diagnosis and Treatment of Dental Facial Abnormalities." He founded the Oral Maxillofacial residency in 1969, which later expanded to a dual degree MD, DDS program in 1978, mentoring over 60 surgeons.

Renowned for his humanitarian work, Dr. Sotereanos provided free treatment to the underprivileged and participated in numerous missions abroad, focusing on oral maxillofacial deformities and cleft palates in children. Dr. George Sotereanos was more than a distinguished physician; he was a devoted father and a man of compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his profession.  His life was a testament to the harmonious blend of hard work, intellect, and the human spirit.  Arrangements were entrusted to Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory.  Condolences and memories may be shared at www.jaycox-jaworskifh.com.  Chris Odasso, Supervisor
