Peter Horace Hawkins, 86, of Duquesne, affectionately known as Pete, was born January 14, 1938, in Moultrie, GA. He was the beloved son of the late Dock and Adeline McKenize Hawkins. Pete peacefully departed this life on February 8, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family in Duquesne, PA.
Pete dropped out of school at an early age to help take care of sisters and brother. Pete protected his siblings and shared a special bond with all of them. Pete and his sister Patricia have the same smile that would light up a room. Although Pete did not finish school. He was a diligent worker.
He worked in construction as a laborer for over 50 years. Union Local 373. He retired on January 1, 2000. When he retired, he attended events for construction workers. He also attended and participated in the Labor Day Parade in Downtown Pittsburgh. He took several family members with him. Pete was a passionate and loving man he loved all his family and friends. Pete was a smooth fellow, always dressed nicely, and during family events and gatherings, you could catch him on the dance floor doing his two-step and spin-around dance.
Pete enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. When Pete hunted, he cooked up a feast, of deer steaks, rabbit, and raccoon with sides of potatoes and carrots. Pete could smell when the fishing season started, he had his fishing poles ready for months. Pete always caught 10-15 fish, he had a magic touch and would give all the fish away to family and friends. Pete had over 100 golf balls and clubs, he enjoyed this sport and loved watching it on TV.
Pete enjoyed attending football games for the youth and high school leagues. If you ever drove to the games with him, you will remember his favorite foods hot dogs and ginger ale. Pete was a Steelers fan and when they scored/ won that southern accent would come out as he screamed. Pete loved cars, he had so many Cadillacs and everyone would remember him when he drove past, he would be playing Teddy Pendergrass and have teddy bears lined up in the back window.
Pete was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist church for over 50 years and served on the Senior Usher Board. Pete has always donated to the Duquesne Community Day Annual Events. He brought food and beverages. Pete always contributed and donated to fundraisers that were needed for the church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, father, Dock Hawkins, mother, Adeline McKenize Hawkins, brother, Levon Hawkins, sisters, Ludy Lee Hawkins, Bobbie Jean Hawkins, Katherine Hawkins, Daisy Bell Hawkins, and daughter, Le’Vona Gay Hawkins.
Peter is survived by his spouse Diane Hawkins for 31 years, three daughters, Ashley Hawkins of Duquesne, PA, Christine (Eugene) Berry of Tennessee, Sandra Davis of Philadelphia, PA; Geraldine (Darian) Montogomery of Georgia, son, Horace William Hawkins of McKeesport, PA., only living sister, Patricia Hawkins of Duquesne, PA.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
