Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | June 20, 2024

Louis "Luigi" Gallo, age 88, passed away on June 18, 2024, at The Palms at O'Neil.  Born August 13, 1935, in the small town of Nocera Terinese, Calabria, Italy, he was the son of the late Angelo and Domenica (Mercurio) Gallo and beloved husband of Catherine (Mastroianni) Gallo.
Louis took a leap of faith when he traveled across continents from Italy to the United States to unite with his wife, Catherine.  Their love story blossomed through heartfelt letters exchanged over oceans until they finally tied the knot on July 5, 1958, in a union that flourished for over 65 years.

Louis dedicated many years to the McKeesport Connecting Railroad, a testament to his strong work ethic and commitment.  A man of faith, he was an active member of Mary, Mother of God Parish and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Italian Sons and Daughters of America Lodge 57 for more than 60 years, where his leadership and dedication shone brightly during his presidency which spanned over three decades.
Louis's true joy came from his family and preserving his Italian roots.  His trips to Italy, surpassing twenty visits, became a cherished tradition, and he shared this passion by taking his children to their ancestral homeland upon their high school graduations.  At his home in McKeesport, he found solace in his vegetable garden, tenderly cultivating seeds from Italy and nurturing his treasured fig trees.  Crafting homemade wine and hosting gatherings filled with love and laughter (he was always telling jokes) were among his favorite pastimes, embodying the essence of his Italian heritage and culture.
In addition to his wife, Catherine, he is survived by daughters, Rosemarie Gallo Natter and Nancy Gallo; grandchildren, Bruno, Angelo, and Rosina Natter; a sister, Gina Ciranni; brothers-in-law, Eugene Mastroianni and Philip (Mickey) Mastroianni; and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Louis A. Gallo; siblings, Maria Mercurio, Giovanni Gallo, and Pasquale Gallo.
Family and friends will be received at Willig Funeral Home & Crematory on Sunday, June 23, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 24, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Mary, Mother of God Parish, St. Patrick Church, 312 32nd St, McKeesport, PA 15132.  The burial will follow at New St. Joseph Cemetery.  Condolences and memories may be shared at www.willigfuneralcremationservices.com.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Italian Sons and Daughters of America Lodge 57 Scholarship Fund in care of Marie Rose, 152 Norrington Dr., Pittsburgh, PA 15236.
