Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | August 26, 2024

Irene "Nina" A. Cain, 100, of White Oak, formerly of Louisa, Virginia, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2024. She was born in Duquesne on January 10, 1924 and was the daughter to the late Rowland and Pearl (Leader) Aston. She was the wife of the late Francis M. Cain, Jr. before his passing in November 7, 1994. Irene went to Robert Morris University to be trained in secretarial duties. She ended up working many years during the war as a secretary for the Mills. Part of her job requirements was to cross trace the furnaces being moved via railroad from Carrie Blast Furnace to the Homestead Mills. She had to climb the rail cars and count the inventory of each car to match her records on the paperwork. Later on, she moved to Virginia, and during her time there she attended the Open Door Christian Church. She was an avid reader and loved studying the bible with her friends and groups that she became a part of. Once moving back to PA, she attended First Evangelical Free Church and joined in many bible studies here as well. Some of her favorite things were her Dachshund/Doxie dogs, and just about any chocolate desserts - ice cream, candy, or cake.

She is survived by her step-daughters, Judith (Dick) Havasy and Patricia (David) Murrow of Virginia; grandchildren, Melinda, Michael, Jodie, Julie, Richard "Rick", Kimberly, and Kurt; as well as great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her niece/bonus daughter, Cheryl Gironda of White Oak; great-nephew, Eric (Cindy) Gironda of White Oak; great-great niece, Erin (Eric) Hoover; great-great nephew, Ryan (Taylor) Gironda; and great-great-great nephew, Jack. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Nina's 8 wonderful caretakers, Cindy, Dolly, Bob, Kari, Kelly, Kathy, Dee, and Gary - as well as to her great hospice nurse, Treasure. In addition to her parents and husband, Nina is preceded in death by her step-son, Francis M. "Skeets" Cain, III., as well as a grandson, David Cain. There is no visitation at this time. Arrangements are by the Gilbert Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1638 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131. (412) 672-6322 Troy J. Gilbert, director. Private Interment will take place at the Washington Cemetery, Washington, PA. A Memorial Service will take place at First Evangelical Free Church at a later date - to be announced. In lieu of flowers, Nina has requested donations be made in her honor to the Open Door Christian School at 551 Lake Rd. Troy, Virginia 22974 or at www.odccs.com.
