Carol Ann Brown
Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | June 02, 2025

Carol Ann Brown, 84, of McKeesport, was born December 7, 1940, in Van Meter, PA. She was the only daughter of the late Claud Theodore Walker and Eldora Elizabeth (Carter) Walker. At home on May 28, 2025, she became absent from her body and present with the Lord. She is preceded in death by her parents, Claud T. and Eldora E. (Doe); beloved husband, Alonzo L. Brown, Jr. (Nab); daughter, Valerie Lynn Brown; sister, Berniece Dixon; brothers, Claud Eugene (Geno) Walker, Howard Milton Walker, Arthur Carl (Gateau) Walker, Vernon Alphonso (Doby) Walker, Carter Melvin Walker, Theodore Franklin “Teddy” Walker, Alvin Floyd Walker, Anthony Wayne Walker and James David “Hawkeye” Walker and grandson, Richard William (Ricky) Herring II.
Carol graduated from Elizabeth Forward High School in 1959, the second class to graduate from this building. Carol was a lifetime member of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church of McKeesport, Pennsylvania. For many years, she served on the Senior Usher Board. She was employed and retired from Mon Yough Community Services as a receptionist. Carol was a member of the Robinettes (Clairton 88’s women’s softball team). She was a fashionista and loved to attend the Ebony Fashion Fair Fashion Show every year that it came to Pittsburgh.
As the “Matriarch,” a title she was honored to hold, Carol loved her family. She was proud of their accomplishments, recognizing and celebrating them. She showed her love for all through her “Soul Food,” which was really food for our minds (lessons to be learned and family history), body, and spirit. She loved Christmas, she would make trays of homemade baked goods, pies, and pound cakes to gift to family, friends, and neighbors. Family members would often request macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, red rice, okra, pound cakes, apple pie, and even recipes. Cooking and baking were her pastimes, and she treated them like a scientific work of art. The kitchen was her haven, and where her culinary legacy will live on in her son and daughter.
If she were not in the kitchen, you would find her spending time with her family, regardless of how near or far they were, because she loved to travel. She did not mind driving to New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Philadelphia, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington, DC., or West Virginia. Arizona, California, Nevada, and North Carolina were only plane rides away. Wherever there was a Walker or Brown-Gregory family reunion, she would be there also and would try to make sure that her branches and leaves of the family tree were there also. She enjoyed family gatherings, card games such as Pitty-Pat and Pokeno, and board games, especially backgammon.
She leaves to honor and cherish her precious memories by her beloved children, daughter, Theresa A. Walker (Donald) Garrett of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, with whom she resided; son, Alonzo L. (Omari) Brown III, Easton, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Jaquaya (JaaKan) Daniels, Alonzo L. (Megan) Brown IV, Jazzmin Herring, T’Anni Herring, Ondi Brown, Alonna (Jones), Onya Brown; great-grandchildren, Jai’Lynn Walker, Rickell Herring, Damarje Warren, Rickiah Herring, George Nelson III, Justice Daniels, Joss Daniels; Godson, Trey L. Walker; niece, Rebecca Walker, of Piscataway, New Jersey; cousin, Martha Jackson, of Charleston, South Carolina, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
