Mercedes Jane Gibbons, 95, of White Oak, died Thursday May 25, 2017. She was born May 31, 1921 in Port Vue and was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Hornyk) Billy. She was the wife of the late John J. (Bus) Gibbons, founder of the Gibbons Real Estate Agency, who died June 7, 1985. Mercedes graduated from McKeesport High school in 1938 and served on all the reunion committees. After graduating from Robert Morris University, she worked as the secretary to the Metallurgist at U.S. Steel until getting married. She was a faithful member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in McKeesport and was a former choir and council member and president of the W.E.L.C.A.
Mercedes also served on the Y.W.C.A. Board, was also a member of the Youghiogheny Country Club where she was very active in the Ladies Golf Association and bridge group. Mercedes took great pleasure in working with the Junior Golfers at YCC. She is survived by twin daughters, Sharen A. and her husband Gary Thomas of Washington, DC., and Naples, FL, and Karen E. Wade of White Oak, her daughter-in-law, Suzan Gibbons of Elizabeth Twp., grandchildren, Todd (Kathy) Knezovic, Ben Knezovic, Greg (Kent) Thomas, Tara (Greg) Hanscom, Michael (Leigh Ann) Gibbons, Casey Gibbons and Shannon Gibbons, great-grandchildren, Matthew, Michelle, Nicholas, Kacy, Shane, Luke, Lucia, and Chloe, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, J. Fred Gibbons. Friends are welcome Tuesday May 30, from 3-7:00 pm, at the Gilbert Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 1638 Lincoln Way, White Oak. (412) 672-6322 Troy J. Gilbert, director. Service will be held in St. John's Lutheran Church on Wednesday May 31, at 11:00 am, with The Rev. Warren Smith , officiating. (Everyone please meet at the church). Private burial will be in the Jefferson Memorial Park, Pleasant Hills.
