Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | October 03, 2017
Alexander "Al" Damianos, age 97 of West Mifflin, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 28, 2017. Born September 24, 1920 in Glassport, he was the son of the late Tsambikos "Jim" and Melanie (Barboteau) Damianos, and loving husband of the late Elizabeth (Heckman) Damianos.
Al honorably served in the US Air Force during WWII where he was stationed in London flying as chief mechanic on B-17’s. He was a true Renaissance Man. He was a pilot, worked in the National Tube steel mill, executed designs in mirrors and sold insurance. His prowess in the pool halls and his semi-pro football career also added to his incredible history. In 1953 Al joined his father full time at Jim's Famous Sauce (formerly Jim’s Hot Dogs) in West Mifflin and eventually took over in 1959, when his father passed away. Al was very active in the business, working full time seven days a week until the age of 91, and was still helping with the business just a week prior to his passing. His incredible memory, humor and kind nature were his hallmarks.
He is survived by his sister, Juliette (the late Eugene) Homoki of Erie; brother, Sylvester (Eva Lu) Damianos of Edgewood; sister-in-law Betty Gulyban (the late Constantino "Gus" Damianos), nephews Gregory (Karen) Homoki; Darrell (Cindy) and Damian Damianos; nieces, Lynne and Laurie Damianos, Leigh Burns and Lisa Homoki (the late Brian Homoki), grand nieces and nephews Eva Burns, Melanie, Molly and Adam (Phoebe) Homoki, and Nicole and Frank Homoki.
Following the founding vision of Al's father, Jim's will continue to operate with its faithful staff under the guidance of Al's brother, Syl.
A Celebration of Al's Life, for family friends and customers, will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2017 from 3-6 pm at Stratigos Banquet Centre, 131 Colonial Manor Rd. North Huntington PA 15642. Memorial Contributions can be made to a charity of your choice.
