Bertha Helen (Check) Dowden Tomko, 98, of Jupiter, Fl, formerly of Port Vue, passed away Monday, January 21, 2019. She was born July 4, 1920 in Clairton and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha (Chontos) Check. She was the wife of the late Duane Dowden and the late John Tomko. Mrs. Tomko was a graduate The Douglas Business School and worked as a credit manager for over 35 years for Sears-Roebuck Company. For 20 plus years, Mrs. Tomko would travel to Winter Haven, Florida for the winter.
Mrs. Tomko would marry John Tomko in 2008 and they moved to Haines City, Florida where they enjoyed ballroom dancing, golf, swimming and daily walks. In 2013, upon the death of her husband she moved to Jupiter Beach where she resided with her niece, Ethel Bailey Colton. She is survived by nieces, Ethel Bailey Colton, Diane Check, Dorothy Vavra, JoAnn Armstrong, and Karen Lee Downey, nephews, Edward, Robert and Joseph Check, step-son, Delmas Dowden, as well the children and grandchildren of her second husband, John, other nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph, William, Edward and Albert Check, sisters, Elizabeth Bailey Reitler and Margaret Wilson, and nieces, Carole Ann Bailey and Darlene Tierno.
