Charles W. White, age 97 of North Huntingdon, PA died on May 24, 2016. The cause of death was heart failure. Mr. White was born on August 16, 1918, in Zelienople, PA to the late Rev. Dr. Charles W. White, DD, and his wife, the late Elizabeth Ash White. (Dr. White was the superintendent of The Lutheran Home and Farm School in Zelienople). He was the youngest child and only son. His sisters were the late Lydia Catharine White (Weigel) and the late Ruth Elizabeth White (Headley). After graduation from Zelienople High School in 1935, he attended the RCA Technical Institute in New York City. After first being employed as a radio operator on private yachts based in the New York City area, he joined the U.S. Merchant Marines as a radio operator at the outbreak of World War II. After surviving a dangerous tour of duty throughout the war, first on a Liberty ship and then on an oil tanker, he returned to Pittsburgh where he was affiliated with various radio stations. He first helped to establish radio station WMCK in McKeesport, and later moved to WHOD (later re-licensed as WAMO) in Homestead. He ended his working career as a telecommunications specialist for the General Electric Corporation. He married Wilma Bowman of Mount Pleasant on December 3, 1949. He is survived by these loving nieces, nephews, and their spouses; Diane Engleka, Elizabeth H. Paul (Richard); Mary H. Sur (Donald); Thomas W. Headley (Donnis); Kenneth W. Weigel (Dianne); and Charles W. Weigel (Stephanie); loving cousins, Charles Bowman and Barbara Lesh; and many grand-nieces, grand-nephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. The funeral service will be held on June 7, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Brush Creek Lutheran Church in Irwin, PA. Interment will be private. The James W. Shirley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangments.
