John Frederick Cochenour, 93, of Elizabeth Township passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2020 at his home. Born September 2, 1926 in McKeesport, son of the late Rose (Wiseman) and Carl Cochenour. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters: Betty and Ruth. As an Aviation Ordnanceman Third Class in the US Navy he served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He graduated from McKeesport High School and received his undergraduate degree from Westminster College with a major in chemistry.Surviving are his wife Gertrude (Spear) Cochenour and their six children Margaret Moeller of Fayetteville, NC (Roy deceased), Carl (LuAnn deceased) of Elizabeth Township, Cynthia Mockel of Daphne, Alabama (Wayne), Ward of Elizabeth Township (Theresa), Laurie of Pittsburgh, and Troy of Elizabeth Township (Denise). Additionally, John and Gertrude’s surviving grandchildren; Kristoffer Moeller, Julianne Slogick, Lauren Bosselait, Lindsey Mockel, Derek Mockel, John Cochenour, Paige Houser, Bryer Cochenour, Jordan Cochenour, their spouses, ten great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews who will mourn their loss. John was an active member of Mt. Vernon Community Presbyterian Church as a Sunday School teacher, lay preacher, Bible scholar, choir member and for many years a member of the church bowling league. He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America as a scout leader and was honored with the Silver Beaver which is awarded to scouts of exceptional character who have provided distinguished service within a council. John was a gardener, an avid music fan and reader. He completed crossword puzzles (in pen) and was known to crack a funny joke or make a witty pun at every opportunity. There is no visitation. Private service and inurnment will be at the Praying Hands Columbarium in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Elizabeth Township. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Vernon Community Presbyterian Church or Boy Scout Troop 99 at 2200 Buena Vista Road, McKeesport, PA 15135.
