Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | August 30, 2020

Gregory S. Hammons was born on February 8, 1958 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Marion Ramseur Hammons and the late Lee Cornelius Hammons.

Herk or Herky as he was affectionately known by his family and friends graduated from Clairton High School in Clairton, Pennsylvania. During his high school years, he was outstanding in sports, gaining a spot on the Junior and High School football, basketball, and baseball teams.  Following his love of art and drawing, he also attended the Art Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Soon after, he was employed at United States Steel Clairton Works, and the City of Clairton Street Department.

Herk had a strong passion for music, singing and dancing, so much so, during the 70’s he and a few of his friends formed a local band.  Herk had a great love for people, a kind heart, and was very personable, he made friends easily. He was always willing to give anyone the shirt off his own back.

Following the call from God, Greg reunited with Morning Star Baptist Church on August 31, 2008 under the leadership of the late Reverend Jerome Stevenson and was also a former member of our Youth Choir.

He became absent from his body and present with the Lord on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Baldwin Health Center in Baldwin, Pennsylvania. Greg was preceded in death by his siblings, Patricia, Kenneth, and Daryl Hammons.

He was loved by many and will always be remembered by his loving Mother, Marion Hammons; children, Brandon (Nicole) Rutledge, Shayvonne (Christopher) Hall, Sheena (Kellen) Bonner; siblings, Karen Wilson, Deaconess Joyce Hammons, Deacon Terrence (Anita) Hammons, and Rodney (Johnetta) Hammons; twelve grandchildren; a special aunt, Ruth Hammons; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and  friends.
