Dewayne B. Spate, age 86 of White Oak, formerly of McKeesport, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2016 at Briarcliff Pavilion in North Huntingdon. Born May 12, 1930 in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Leland and Minnie (Barth) Spate, and husband of Nancy (Symington) Spate for 65 years. Dewayne honorably served our country in the US Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, he began his professional career as a photographer, working for G.C. Murphy Co., and also for The Times Observer. He was a member of the former Hope United Methodist Church. Dewayne will be remembered for being one of the biggest Civil War buffs, and he enjoyed taking his children to visit Gettysburg, where he was one of the best tour guides. He also loved all animals, especially his dog, Lucy, as well as watching and feeding the birds in his yard. Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes, and above all, he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. His games of croquet with his grandkids will never be forgotten. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Jayne (Albert Keith) Szirmae of White Oak, Jim (Cindy) Spate of McKeesport, Jon (Susan) Spate of Rostraver Twp. and Judy (Chester) Berg of Elizabeth Boro.; grandchildren, Adam, Nick, Jody, Jenny, Sandor, Jake, Andrew, Mitchell, Zac and Kendrick; nine great-grandchildren; brother, David (Vicki) Spate of Missouri; special brother-in-law Edward Toperzer; sister-in-law, Nina (Symington) Howard; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Jane Toperzer; and his faithful dog, Lucy. Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 from 2-8 p.m. Funeral Service will be Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home.
