Rev. Stephen M. Chervenak, S.T.L., D.Min., age 82, of White Oak, died Monday, August 22, 2016 at the Vincentian Home in Pittsburgh. He was born in Homestead on July 30, 1934 and is the son the late Stephen and Mary Yuhas Chervenak.
He attended St. Ann/Fifth Ward Elementary School in Homestead and Homestead High School. He received his Doctor of Ministry from St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore, MD, his Bachelor of Arts from St. Vincent College in Labrobe in 1956 and Licentiate in Sacred Theology from St. Mary’s Seminary University in Baltimore, MD in 1960. He was ordained on March 25, 1960 by Bishop John Wright at St. Paul Cathedral in Pittsburgh and was incardinated into the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
He was assigned as Parochial Vicar at St. Pius X Church in Pittsburgh from 1960 until 1965; St. Agatha Church in Bridgeville, as Parochial Vicar from 1965 until 1969; the Headmaster of St. Thomas High School from 1969 until 1972; He had a dual Administrator position at St. Januarius Church in Plum and at St. Anthony School in Oakmont from 1972 until 1975. He then served as Pastor of St. Angela Merici Church in White Oak from 1975 until 2009. Father Steve took a mini sabbatical at North American College in Europe in 2003 and returned as Administrator of St. Angela Merici Church until October 1, 2013 when he officially retired.
He served as the Dean of the Mon Yough Deanery from 1991 until 1998 and then again from 2000 until 2009. He also served as Confessor of the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer from 1986 until 2013 and again from 2014 until 2016. Since 2014 until the present he served as the Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his siblings; Sr. Helen Chervenak of the Motherhouse Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in North Hills, Christine (the late William) Burdick of Stow, Ohio, Margaret (the late Donald) Vojtusak of Stow, Ohio and Dr. John (Judy) Chervenak of Paradise Valley, Arizona and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers in law; Mary and Albert Miller and Ann and William.
Friends will be received at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, 15131 on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. and again on Thursday from Noon until 4:00 p.m. Friends will also be received Thursday evening at St. Angela Merici Church from 6:00 p.m until Vesper Services which will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Angela Merici Church with burial following at Calvary Cemetery, Pgh.
