Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | June 26, 2024

Linda Carol (Laughrey) Tafel, age 87, of Monroeville, formerly of Irwin and McKeesport, died June 25, 2024, at Juniper Village Monroeville after a long illness. Born April 12, 1937, in Beaver Falls, she was the daughter of the late Lindsay F. and Ann Jane (DeVoe) Laughrey and wife of the late Lyn Scott Tafel.

Linda graduated from Beaver Falls High School and Geneva College, where she earned a degree in Mathematics. She began working at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in 1959 as an Informational Technical Assistant and retired in 1978. After she married her husband Lyn in 1964, she lived in many local areas and eventually moved to Florida. They later returned to Pennsylvania and built a home in Irwin.

Linda was a member of the First Evangelical Free Church, where she served as the church librarian, on the funeral committee, Ladies White Cross, and in the choir. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, immersing herself in the pages of books, particularly her Bible, and passionately supporting her favorite sports teams, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pirates, and Steelers. Her unwavering spirit and zest for independence defined her character, leaving a lasting impact on all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by nieces, nephews, and church family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Suzanne "Sue" Ballard. Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Sunday, June 30, 2024, from 1 p.m. until the funeral service at 3 p.m. Pastor Kevin Labby will officiate. A private burial will take place at Irwin Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Evangelical Free Church.
