icholas Angelo Nero, age 71 of Sumter, SC and formerly of Jefferson Borough, died at home August 8, 2023. Born November 4, 1951, he was the son of the late Domenick Nero and Lucille (LaValle) Nero of Jefferson Borough. Nick was a 1970 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and a decorated veteran of 22 years in the United States Air Force. Nick was very active in American Legion Post 15 of Sumter serving as commander, adjutant, and historian as well as chairing the Sumter County Fair Commission hosted by Post 15. As a member of the Sumter County Garden Club, he was a certified master gardener and helped beautify his community, Nick was also a member of the Clariton Anglers Club, where he spent much of his summer time with his family. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 35 years, Elaine; sisters Karen (Michael) Dougherty of Jefferson, Lori (James) Banner of Boise, ID, and Mary DiLonardo of Rostraver Twp.; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Samuel R. Byers Sr., age 78, of Elizabeth Twp., passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at UPMC McKeesport. He retired as a heater at U.S. Steel, Clairton Works. An Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a member of New Hope Assembly of God Church in Elizabeth Twp., the American Hunting Club in Potter County, and the Elizabeth Twp. Sportsmen's Association. Born August 31, 1945 in Jacksonville, FL, he was a son of the late Robert E. and Elizabeth J. "Bam" (Wall) Byers. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary E. (Csokuly) Byers; daughter, Mary Ann (Christopher Mozgawa) Luketic of West Newton; son, Samuel R. (Ami Beth Frelick-Ellis) Byers Jr. of Buena Vista; grandchildren, Daniel (Jessica) Luketic, Derek (Chelcey) Luketic, David Luketic and Dillon Luketic; great-grandson, Ashton Luketic; step-great-grandchildren, James, Timber, Lalen, Riley and Kalie; sisters, Nancy Blake of Tavares, FL, Lois Jane Kwiecinski of Baldwin and Dolores (Joe) Martin of Florida; brothers, Kenneth (Nancy) Byers of Baltimore, MD and Leonard Byers of Forward Twp.; also, nieces and nephews. Sylvia A. (DeFazio) Tullius, age 92 of Clairton, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2023. Born September 25, 1930 in Clairton, she was a daughter of the late Dominic J. DeFazio, Sr. and Mary (Capozzi) DeFazio. A member of Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish - St. Clare of Assisi Church, where she also served as a sacristan, Sylvia volunteered for Meals on Wheels in Clairton, for Jefferson Hospital, and for the PTA when her children were young. Most of all, her family will remember her as a mother through-and-through and as an excellent cook, baker, and seamstress. Besides her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband James E. Tullius, who passed away May 26, 2014; her son James M. Tullius, who passed away January 12, 2016; and her siblings Clementine Nuzzo and Dominic J. DeFazio, Jr.. She is survived by her children Sr. Sylvia A. Tullius, OSF of Warrendale, Patricia M. (Andrew) West of Clairton, Anita L. (Larry) Elder of Loudon, TN, Mary B. Tullius of Clairton, and Danette M. (David) Alderson of Jefferson Hills; her grandchildren Andrew J. (Tara) West, Jeffrey A. (Lisa) West, Shaun P. (Tracey) Elder, Mary C. (Paul) Formella, James V. and Rachel K. Tullius, David G. Katherine L. Carr, age 88 of Versailles, passed away at home on Friday, September 1,2023. Born December 10, 1934 in Versailles, she was a daughter of the late Matthew and Mildred (Brketic) Brkovich. A 1960 graduate of the Duquesne University School of Pharmacy, where she was a member of the Rho-Chi Honor Society, Katherine retired as a pharmacist for UPMC McKeesport. She was also a parishioner of Mary, Mother of God Parish - St. Patrick's Church in Christy Park and a member of the CFU Lodge #146 of Versailles. Besides her parents, Katherine was preceded in death by her husband Regis G. Carr, who passed away August 13, 2011, and her siblings Ann Tucker and Steve, Frank, John, William, and George Brkovich. She is survived by her children Allan R. (Cindy) Carr of White Oak and Terri A. (Jimbo) Barry of McKeesport; her grandchildren Jimmy and Katie Barry, Ryan (Laren) and Shane Carr, and Alicia (Chukky) Okobi; great-grandchildren Maddox and Dylan Carr; her sister-in-law Loretta Brkovich; and also nieces and nephews.

Lois (Price) Bruce, age 83, of Baldwin, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 31, 2023. She was a former president of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Willock Social Association and former Queen of the local Red Hat Society. She loved spending time with family, her best friends and neighbors. Born April 3, 1940 in Pittsburgh, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Price and wife of the late Wayne "Tubby" Bruce. William R. Firczak, age 86, of Elizabeth and Forward Twp., passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at Southwestern Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was a retired electrical technician and consultant for Lectromelt in Pittsburgh. An Air Force veteran having served in the Korean War, he was a member of Central Highlands Community United Methodist Church in Elizabeth Twp., the Kastan-Uveges VFW Post 7632 in Elizabeth, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and all things outdoors. Born October 10, 1936 in Elizabeth, he was a son of the late John and Catherine Firczak. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Donna J. (Joll) Firczak; sons, Dr. Scott (Susan) Firczak of Mt. Ulla, NC and Rick (Vickie) Firczak of Mooresville, NC; sister, Wilma Fedorka of Elizabeth; also, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Randy A. Firczak, a brother and sisters.

Donald C. Rieger, age 96 of Belle Vernon and formerly of Erie, passed away at home on Monday, August 28, 2023. Born June 3, 1927 in Erie, he was a son of the late Anthony and Margaret (Eichelsdorfer) Rieger. A US Army Veteran of World War II, Donald retired as a service manager for the former Dictophone Corp. (now Pitney Bowes) as a service manager. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, especially on Lake Erie, and following his beloved Pittsburgh Pirates through thick and thin. Donald is survived by his children Joseph Rieger of Belle Vernon, Mark A. (Connie) Rieger of Erie, Gary (Victoria) Rieger of Austin, TX, and Shari (Tom Arndt) Rieger of Memphis, TN; his grandchildren Sean (Bridget) Rieger, Ryan (Amanda) Rieger, Bryan Rieger, Jeremy (Laura) Rieger, Destiny (Yee) Wells, Justin (Melissa) Rieger, Sienna Rieger, and Aidan Rieger; his great-grandchildren Hannah, Kaia, Bodi, Soren, River, Carter, Karly, McKenzie, Eli, Faith, Grace, and Hope; his great-great-grandchild Azaela; and also nieces and nephews.
