In 1945, at the young age of 17 Joe Gdovic enlisted in the Maritime Service, United States Coast Guard-Merchant Marines and served overseas in Italy & the Mediterranean Region. Just a year later he entered active service with the United States Army, he made Private and then Sergeant and served in Japan with the Nugata Military Government Team. Between 1947 and 1951 he served at Fort Lawton, Washington and Fort Lee, Virginia. He was granted an Honorable Discharge as Sergeant and awarded the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupational Medal, Japan. He received an Honorable Release from Active Duty as a Corporal. His hobbies during his military service included boxing and baseball. He was also quite skilled at the games of pool and cards. He was a 47-year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, USA.

Robert Karl Hatcher, age 94, of White Oak, died April 28, 2019. He was born in McKeesport on July 23, 1924 and is the son of the late William P. and Clara A. Helfer Hatcher and the husband of the late Virginia Naomi Strawderman Hatcher. He was a proud vet of the US Navy during WWII where he served in the South Pacific aboard the USS Trathen DD530. He was a member of the White Oak American Legion Post #701 and VFW Post 8430 Hilltoppers where he enjoyed many Straub Beers with his friends. He enjoyed flea markets, collecting cans for spare change and bowling. He loved sharing stories about his military service and the CCC Camps in Idaho. The family would like to thank his very good friends who helped out over the years, especially Joe, Darlene, Danny, and Daren. Robert was employed at US Steel National Tube in McKeesport until he retired. His favorite saying was, “Life is short, and the wages are small, take it easy, and God bless them all”.

Mildred Berliner Linzer, age 91, of Monroeville, formerly of White Oak, died on Thursday, April 25, 2019. She was the beloved wife of the late Sidney Linzer and the daughter of the late Herman and Bertha (Silber) Berliner. She is survived by her sister, Harriet Menzer, now of Sarasota, FL, her loving son Richard Linzer and his wife Susan whom Millie loved as her daughter. She is also survived by her grandchildren Ross (Lindsey) Linzer of Davie, FL and Rabbi Maura (Liad Itzhaky) Linzer of Pleasantville, NY and her great-grandchildren, Sarah Itzhaky, Ori Itzhaky, Noah Linzer, and Zachary Linzer, relatives and many friends.

Ronald J. “Lukie” Lucas, Sr., age 76, of North Huntingdon, died April 17, 2019. He was born in McKeesport on August 3, 1942 to the late John P. and Rose Palygi Lucas. Ronald was employed by the borough of West Mifflin for almost 36 1/2 years then worked for Norwin School District as a security guard during his retirement.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rita Lucas; son, Ronald (Jennifer) Lucas, Jr. of Glassport; granddaughter, Karlye Lucas; step-grandchildren, Rebecca Dryer and Nathaniel James Boykin; sisters-in-law, Janice (William) Vasy of N. Huntingdon, Kathy (the late Michael) Vrabel of Plum Borough; and many nieces and nephews. Ronald was preceded in death by his daughter Kimberly Lucas.
Family and friends will be received at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, Inc., 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412-678-6177) on Friday, April 19, 2019 from 4 pm until 8 pm, where service will be held Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 9:30 am with Pastor Cindy Lindow officiating. Burial will follow at Lebanon Church Cemetery.

Sarah Lane, age 92, of Greensburg, died April 15, 2019. She was born in Carfin, Scotland on May 14, 1926 and is the daughter of the late Patrick and Catherine Rennie Kelly. She was the wife of the late Frank Drnevich and the late William Lane. She worked for many years in the cafeteria for McKeesport School District and prior to that, during WWII, she worked at the Christy Park Works in McKeesport. She was a very dedicated mother who loved vacationing and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed listening to music and attending concerts.
She is survived by her children, Frank (Angela) Drnevich of McKeesport; Rebecca (Joseph) Larson of White Oak; Sheila Piechowicz of Irwin; Thomas (Melissa) Drnevich of North Huntingdon; Timothy (Diane) Drnevich of North Huntingdon; James (Nadine) Lane of Greensburg; Shawn (the late Donald) Lane of Oakdale; 9 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her 4 sisters.
The family would like to thank the clergy, sisters, and staff at St. Anne’s Home in Greensburg for their compassionate care.
Family and friends will be received at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, Inc., 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412-678-6177) on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 from 2 pm until 8 pm. A blessing service will be held at St. Angela Merici Church, 1640 Fawcett Ave, White Oak, PA 15131, on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at 10:00 am. Burial will follow.

Peebs began his career as an auto body technician in the 70’s with his father at the family business, Right Cross Auto, in Christy Park. He continued his career in the same field at various car dealerships in the area. He loved his family and friends, especially his children and granddaughter. Mark was the life of the party and if you met him once you had a friend for life.

Deborah Ann Snyder, age 67 of Erie, PA, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Allegheny General Hospital. She was born in Erie, PA on October 21, 1951, the daughter of the late Fred and LouAnn Schultz Whitesel. Debbie put her heart to provident use by taking care of others and pursued a career in nursing. She was employed by Millcreek Community Hospital for over 20 years. She was an avid fan of the arts and entertainment including music, movies, stage productions, and artistic endeavors.

Joseph S. Nemeth, EdD, PM, a nationally known educator and reading expert and long-time resident of Bowling Green, OH, passed away on April 1, 2019 at his home in Perrysburg, OH. Dr. Nemeth was born in Glassport, PA on February 22, 1925. He is survived by his wife, Elvira (Balku) Nemeth with whom he enjoyed nearly 65 years of happy marriage, his daughters Mary Anne Nemeth (Joseph Phillips), Ann Arbor, MI and Dr. Julie (Richard) Shockley, Wellesley, MA, and sons Joseph S. (Joann) Nemeth Jr., Las Vegas, NV and Michael A. (Dana) Nemeth, Bowling Green, OH. He had six grandchildren: Joseph S. Nemeth III, Cassandra (Nemeth) Jackson, Samuel, William, and Harrison Shockley, Cole and Miles Nemeth, and two great-grandchildren, Jadyn and Jonah Nemeth. He was the son of the late Arpad and Mariska (Borso) Nemeth. His brother, Aladar Vilmos Nemeth, and sister, Jolan (Nemeth) Rogers, pre-deceased him.
