Mildred C. Hanyak, age 95 of Zelienople, formerly of McKeesport, died Tuesday, March 26, 2019. She was born October 25, 1923 in Port Vue, the daughter of the late Andrew and Anna Bednar Yuscinsky. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Joseph J. Hanyak. Millie dedicated her life to caring for her family and especially her special needs granddaughter.  She is survived by her loving daughters, Helen (James) Stamatelos of Zelienople and Mary Dettore of North Versailles; brother, William Yuscinsky of Orlando, FL; sister, Rose Judd, of McKeesport; grandchildren, Kristen, J. J. and Michael Stamatelos; also, nieces and nephews.

Nelson Stanley Hitchens, age 82, of North Huntingdon, died on March 26th, 2019.  He was born in Port Vue on March 7, 1937 and is the son of the late Earl Maxwell and Mary Ellen Bain Hitchens. Beloved husband for 61 years of the late Dorothy Hitchens (recently deceased on December 22nd); loving father of Cheryl (Frank Bohm) Hitchens, Craig Hitchens and Chris (Denise) Hitchens; caring brother of Donald (Trudy) Hitchens, the late Dorothy (Melvin) Joel and the late Earl Hitchens, Jr.; and cherished grandfather of Scott Hitchens, Andrew Hitchens, Melissa Rollinson and Nathan Liddell. A graduate of McKeesport High School and possessing an inventive spirit, Nelson spent over 30 years at Carbide as a tool-and-die maker.  He was a lifelong, dedicated Pittsburgh sports fan and an enthusiastic cyclist; he and Dorothy traveled many of Pennsylvania’s rails-to-trails together.

Judie G. O’Keefe, age 93 of McCandless, died Monday, March 18, 2019 at The Arbors at St. Barnabas – Valencia. She was born January 9, 1926 in Jeannette, PA, the daughter of the late Joseph and Sally Williams Gabriel and wife of the late John J. O’Keefe. Judie was a 1948 graduate of Duquesne University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with a minor in Psychology. She was the social chairman for her sorority Sigma Lambda PHI and was a greeter for St. Barnabas. She and her husband John were avid ballroom dancers and achieved the status of king and queen of the ball. She was an excellent seamstress and made her own ball gowns. She touched the lives of everyone she met.

Feeney Gilkey.  She received her bachelor’s degree in Education from Duquesne University and worked for over 20 years as the school librarian for St. Angela Merici School in White Oak. She loved reading books, was a member of St. Angela Merici Church, and was a loving mother and grandmother.

Thomas A. Baka, age 77 of McKeesport, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, Monday, March 11, 2019. He was born October 25, 1941 in Charleroi, the son of the late Michael A. and Mary Uchacz Baka. He worked as an electrician for U.S. Steel-Dravosburg and after retiring he loved driving for Access. He was devoted to the Lord, an usher and member of First Baptist Church, McKeesport for 37 years. He was a regular donor to the American Red Cross and a lifelong fisherman. He was an avid bowler all of his life, and his teammates named their league “Baka’s Pirates” in honor of him. Thomas enjoyed helping people in need and especially loved his family.

Patricia Clark McCusker, age 87, of Elizabeth Twp., formerly of Glassport, died Saturday, March 9, 2019.  She was born in Mexico, Maine, on Nov. 13, 1931 and is the daughter of the late James and Dorothy Cecelia Bryant Mowat.  She is the wife of the late Thomas J. McCusker who died March 12, 1991.  She was preceded in death by siblings, James Mowat, Kirk Mowat, Terrence Mowat and Bonnie Mowat Fircak. 

Patricia is survived by sisters-in-law, Virginia Mowat of Liberty Borough and Barbara Mowat of Mission, Texas; nieces and nephews, Timothy Mowat, Daniel (Dawn) Mowat, Heather (Richard Sherman) Mowat, Terri Lee (Dave) Petrillo, Jamie (Brian) Young, Heidi (Joe) Povinelli, Kirk Mowat, Kevin Fircak and Michel (Jenny) Fircak.

In addition to being a loving homemaker, Patricia was a waitress for the former Klein’s Restaurant in Pittsburgh for approximately 25 years, the business manager for the former T.J. McCusker Mechanical Contracting in Glassport, a retail specialist for the men’s suits department at Macy’s in Century III and Monroeville Malls, and also was very proud of her work as the house manager and volunteer for Family House in Pittsburgh.

Family and friends will be received at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA  15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, Supervisor 412-678-6177) on Friday, March 15, 2019 from 3:00 until 8:00 pm and also on Saturday, March 16, 2019  from 11:00 am until the time of service at 12:30 pm in the funeral home chapel.

Burial will follow in Round Hill Cemetery.

She was born March 14, 1933 in Columbia, South Carolina, the daughter of the late Theron and Inez Sharpe. She was a member of St. Patrick Church, McKeesport, where she was an usher and an adult volunteer in the youth group. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, William T. Nola, Sr.; children, Thomas (Eileen) Nola of Lincoln Place, Christopher (Lorraine) Nola of Glassport, Catherine L. Nola of North Huntingdon, Neal (Lisa) Nola of Monroeville;  sister, Geraldine (Gary) Roberts of Asheville, Georgia; brother, Leland Sharpe, also of Asheville, Georgia; 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Raymond Nola.

Lou Ann Leech, age 58, of White Oak, died Sunday, February 3, 2019. She was born in McKeesport on March 20, 1960 and is the daughter of Jack Leech of White Oak and the late Patricia Leighty Leech. She was a manager for many years at the former Bettis Lounge.

In addition to her father, Lou Ann is survived by sisters, Linda (Edward) Raimondi of Munhall; Kimberly (Timothy) Toth of Munhall; nieces, Casey Howie of Dravosburg; Erin (Rob) Zotti of Long Island, NJ; nephews, Frank Muir of Austin, TX; Ryan (Heather) Leech of North Huntingdon; great nieces, Jaiden and Payten. She was preceded in death by her brother, Lenny (Melanie) Leech.

Mary Barbara Whitney, age 78 of Adrian, PA, died Thursday, February 21, 2019. She was born July 22, 1940 in Monongahela, the daughter of the late Harry and Rita McKitrick Biddle, and is the wife of the late William Whitney. Barb and her husband worked for the Striffler family for many years. She was a member of the American Legion Post 325 and ladies auxiliary in Cowansville, PA, past president of Easter Seals auxiliary, and a member of the River’s Edge Quilting Club. She is survived by her daughters, Shari Whitney of Boston, PA, Beth Ann (Tim) Flaherty of McKeesport; sons, William (Cherlyn) Whitney, Jr. of Moss Point, Mississippi, Rich Whitney of N. Versailles, Mike Whitney of Liberty Borough; sisters, Bernadette Goldie of Glassport, Patricia Adami of Columbus, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Barbara was preceded in death by her daughter Patty Sue.

Katherine A. Clay, age 94, of McKeesport, died February 21, 2019. She was born in Wilmington, Delaware on October 8, 1924 to the late Matthew and Margaret Lucy Sullivan. She is preceded in death by her husband, the late William F. Clay and her daughter, the late Margaret Mary “Maggie” Clay. She was a member of Corpus Christi Parish for many years and was a retired intake coordinator from Mon Yough Community Mental Health Services of McKeesport. She enjoyed going to the gym every day, but she loved spending time with her family more.

She is survived by her sons; W. Matthew “Matt” (Donna) Clay of Greensburg, Michael (Lori) Clay of White Oak, and Robert (Margaret) Clay of West Mifflin; grandchildren; William Russin (Vivian) Clay, Katherine Jean (Phillip) Horrell, Rick Blose, Jacy Keenan, Tara (Eric Castaneda) Clay, Lindsay Nicole Clay, and Natalie Ann (Robert) Adams; great grandchildren, Phillip, Alex, Daniela, Cruz, Vada, and Nolan.

Jean (Martin) Dewey

Jean (Martin) Dewey of Virginia Beach, VA, died February 18, 2019. Ain’t no grave, gonna hold me down!

On December 2, 1933, she was born in McKeesport, PA to Agnes and James Martin. Married for 55 years to husband, Jerry, who preceded her in death in 2012, they moved between Pittsburgh, PA; Fairmont, WV; and Toledo, OH - raising their four girls (Bobbi Case, Nancy Grice, Jeri Lee Edwards, Robyn Card) and one boy (Marty Dewey) - before settling in Virginia Beach in 1979. While in Pittsburgh, she held several administrative jobs. Following in her mother's footsteps, she was drawn to the medical field. She worked in hospitals in Toledo and Virginia Beach, spending 24 years at Virginia Beach General, and 6 more years at Sentara before retiring.
