She was Native American (Seneca Tribe), Irish, and Patriotic to the core. Her home is filled with American Indian memorabilia, shamrocks, and American flags.

She was born August 17, 1920 in Pittsburgh to the late John Anthony and Margaret Daily Mitchell. She was also preceded in death by her husband the late Arthur E. Glaser and her daughter, Jayne Plescia and sister, Florence McConnell. Annette retired as a medical secretary from Steel Valley Orthopedics and was a member of St. Mark Parish, (the former St. Joseph Church) where she was a former president and former secretary of the parish council  and served on the Ladies of Charity, was a former president of the McKeesport Art Group, former secretary of the Italian Sons and Daughters of America, and former secretary of the Port Vue Seniors.

Clifford Wesley Flegal, Sr., age 99, of the Tenth Ward section of McKeesport, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2020 in Pittsburgh, PA. He was born Aug. 2, 1920, in Lincoln Place, one of 10 children. Cliff, the last of his generation in the family tree was preceded in death by his parents, the late Foster E. and Mary Jane (Baxter) Flegal, Sr., brothers, Melvin (Fania) Flegal, Foster E. "Bud" (Virginia) Flegal, Jr., George A. (Mary) Flegal, Paul E. (Florence) Flegal, M. Wallace "Wally" Flegal and John Williard "Jack" Flegal; sisters, Beulah Flegal, Margaret (Thomas) O'Toole and Blanche (Thomas) Allison and his beloved wife, Janet Buti Flegal. 

As a young man, Cliff enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Dec. 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served as a Chief Yeoman during World War II traveling to Europe and the Pacific, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. Throughout his life he showed pride in family, city, flag and country.

Cliff, a lifelong and proud Republican was formerly active in politics as a Candidate for US Congress in 1951. He served as McKeesport City Controller, City Clerk of Council, and Chairman of the McKeesport Republican Committee. When he was in his 60’s, he retired as a Workman’s Compensation Representative for the Department of Labor and Industry where he helped retirees with benefits.

Barbara Volas

Barbara Volas, age 84, of White Oak, passed away on February 3, 2020 surrounded by family and friends after a brief illness.  She was born on March 3, 1935 in Kremasti, Rhodes, Greece and is the daughter of the late Peter J. and Katerina Cantemiry Volas.  

Barbara graduated from McKeesport High School in 1952.  She attended Pratt Institute in New York.  She later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Painting from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1963 and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1967.  Barbara lived the artist’s life.  She held adjunct professor appointments at Western College for Women, now Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio and Carnegie Mellon University.  She exhibited her work at individual, group and invitational shows throughout Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania.  Several of her paintings and prints are part of individual and corporate collections.  Barbara earned awards and commissions from the National Endowment for the Arts and Pennsylvania Council for the Arts.  Barbara will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews when they would visit her home, garden and studios.
