Emily M. McNulty, 95, of North Huntingdon Township, died Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Redstone Highlands, Greensburg. Born July 1, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Evan B. and Margaret Katherine Goetz Williams; wife of the late George Ellis “Mac” McNulty; sister of the late Marcie Williams; and is survived by her stepdaughter, Janice (Myron) Zuber of North Huntingdon; granddaughter Lisa (Mike) Dougherty of North Huntingdon; grandson, Greg Zuber of North Huntingdon. She was a member of Kephart United Methodist Church, sang in its choir, was a member of the Mendleson Choir of Pittsburgh, and was a volunteer at McKeesport Hospital. Friends will be received in the Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport, PA 15132 on Monday from 2-6 PM, where a service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 9, 2018. Jane M. Oyler (Morgan), age 90, of Port Vue, on January 2, 2018. Daughter of Lloyd C. and Ruth Minerva Morgan. Wife of the late Alfred C. Oyler. Mother of David C. Oyler (Anne Marie) of South Park, PA and Kim E. Cawthon (Grady Cawthon, Jr.) of Lenexa, KS. Brother Lloyd Morgan, Jr. and sisters Ruth Minerva Brewer, Mary Garcia (Dr. Bertram Garcia) and Karen I. Banker (John Banker) of Nashua, NH. Grandmother of Rachelle Knudson (Braun Knudson) of Sandy, UT and David Cawthon of Lenexa, KS and great-grandmother of Grey and Mazzy Knudson. Jane and Alfred were married for 49 years until his death in 1995. They traveled extensively by motor home, visiting every state except Rhode Island and Hawaii. Jane was a volunteer at the McKeesport Library and the radiology department of McKeesport Hospital. She was a member and founder of a Pittsburgh Essential Tremors support group and has donated her brain to Columbia University for Essential Tremor research. Elveria H. Johnson, 82, of McKeesport, died Saturday, December 2, 2017 at UPMC McKeesport. Born in Port Vue, PA on January 19, 1935, she had been employed by the former Famous Department Store and Bill Taylor’s Catering. She was a member of the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, White Oak and its Young At Heart, Pricilla Circle, and Women of E.L.C.A., was a volunteer at the Intersection and Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank, was a member of Amaranth, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Beatrice Chapter #147, Pythian Sisters of Irwin. Daughter of the late Charles and Hilda Marie Johnson Blamick; wife of the late Donald Lewis Johnson; sister of the late Robert S. (Lois) Blamick, Joseph E. Blamick, Charles (Gertrude) Blamick and Jeannette (Steve) Jeney; sister in law of the late Walter Mains and Carl Seitz. She is survived by her son, Wayne (Deborah) Johnson of Driftwood, PA; granddaughter, Melissasue Moore of Emporium, PA; brother, Wesley E. (Carolyn) Blamick of Tallahasse, FL; sisters, Vervaine E. Bertha Mae Robinson Chaplin, 89, of Liberty Boro, died Friday, November 10, 2017 at UPMC McKeesport. She was born in Liberty Boro on October 12, 1928, the third and youngest child of Nathan McGrew Robinson and Carrie Lou Harper Robinson. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Byron L. Chaplin Jr., her brother William Nathan Robinson and her sister, Carrie Grace Robinson Kauffmann.
She grew up on the dairy farm owned by her grandfather, William J. Robinson. At the age of 14, she ministered to and held vigil for her uncle, grandfather and father as all succumbed in the span of 1 month. Later, she also ministered to her namesake Aunt Bertha in her final days.
After graduating from McKeesport High School in 1946, Bertha Mae attended The Pennsylvania College for Women (PCW – now Chatham University) where she majored in kindergarten-primary education, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. She taught in the Pittsburgh public schools for two years and was a substitute teacher in the McKeesport Area and South Allegheny school districts.
From her marriage in 1951, she became the mother of Byron L. Chaplin III of Indianapolis, Indiana and Susan E. Chaplin (David) Buchter. She was the grandmother of Sarah J. Cox and Rebecca E. Andrew, both of Illinois.
Bertha Mae’s Sunday School class at the former First Presbyterian Church of McKeesport studied Elton Trueblood’s “The Company of the Committed” which inspired her to pursue an effort to meet the needs of mentally handicapped pre-schoolers in the McKeesport area. This study culminated in the founding of what ultimately became known as the McKeesport Pre-School for Exceptional Children. As its first teacher and director beginning in 1962, she worked tirelessly to secure funding and develop an unparalleled professional program that eventually outgrew multiple sites. In the late 1990’s she worked with her board of directors and architects to envision, fund, and erect a new home for the preschool on Long Run Road in White Oak. The name was changed at that time to the Long Run Children’s Learning Center.
In 1998, shortly after the completion of construction, she retired, having lead the organization for 36 years. That same year, she was honored by the Chatham College Alumnae Association as its Distinguished Alumna of the year. Later that year, the McKeesport High School Alumni and Friends Association selected her as one of 7 recipients for their Hall of Fame, recognizing her contributions to education and her passion and love for these special needs children.
Throughout her life, she was surrounded by and cultivated in a deep Christian faith that served her well and which she shared unapologetically in countless ways with unknown numbers of people in need or in crisis. She honored her Savior, Jesus Christ and set an example for many in her family and community. Many times she speculated about eternal life by saying “if only those in heaven could come back and tell us how wonderful it is…” She never feared the end of life, but instead looked forward to the reunion with loved ones with whom she is certainly celebrating today!

Betty A. Welcker, 93, of McKeesport, died Monday, November 6, 2017 at Forbes Hospital, Monroeville. Born in McKeesport, February 5, 1924, she was the retired secretary to the Dean of Student Affairs at the McKeesport Campus of Penn State University. She was a member of McKeesport Presbyterian Church, volunteered at McKeesport Hospital and the Latterman Clinic, and was a graduate of McKeesport High School. Daughter of the late James and Lillian Webb Cardwell; wife of the late Howard F. Welcker; sister of the late Jane Moffitt and Tom and James Cardwell; she is survived by her son, Paul F. Welcker of Monroeville; daughter, Karen (Bob) Brown of Chester, VA; sister in law, Evelyn Barrett of White Oak; also by nieces and nephews and 3 grand dogs. Minnie Barbara Abrams Simon, 100. Born in McKeesport on January 2, 1917, she was the daughter of Abraham and Helen Abrams. Her husband Abraham G. Simon preceded her in death. Minnie graduated from McKeesport High School in 1934. She worked as a bookkeeper for Traczynski Meatpacking Company on White Street for many years until her eyesight began to fail her. She was a member of the Anshe Sfard and Gemilas Chesed Synagogues. She was active in the Gemilas Chesed Sisterhood, a member of McKeesport's chapter of Hadassah and B'Nai Brith. Despite her limited sight, she became known for her creative flower and fruit arrangements for celebrations at the synagogue. When asked how she was able to design arrangements without being able to see well, Minnie would say, “I see it in my mind and then it is easy.” With a group of Jewish women in McKeesport, Minnie was part of a monthly “study group” that discussed books, most related to Judaism, led by Tree of Life Synagogue Rabbi Edmond Neiss. She and Abe moved to Pembroke Pines, FL in 1978 where she lived until 2014 when she came to live with her daughter in Philadelphia. Mother of Dr. Elaine Simon of Philadelphia, PA and Dr. Richard Simon of Pembroke Pines, FL. Grandmother of Claire and Nora Crawford of Philadelphia. Rae Kessler, 91, of White Oak died Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Riverside Nursing Center. Born in Glassport, July 21, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Myer and Rose Recht Alpern and wife of the late Robert Kessler. She was a buyer for the former Gimbel’s Department Stores, and worked until age 82 at their Eastland and Pittsburgh locations. Nancy W. Guarascio, 79, of Marietta, GA, died at her home on April 4, 2017. Born in McKeesport, January 27, 1938, daughter of the late Robert J. and Sophia Dahlin Wampler. Wife of the late Louis A. She retired from IBM after a successful 38 year career, and was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club. She enjoyed traveling, reading, and preparing gourmet meals. Edward Eugene Humphreys, 75, of McKeesport, died January 23, 2017, with his sister by his side. She was there for him when he needed her, and was his best friend. Beloved son of the late Edward R. and Isabelle C. McBride Humphreys, their first born. They were truly blessed to have a wonderful son. He was their life, and he gave them nothing but happiness. His life was fulfilled with the love that he got from his parents. He was a kind hearted person and everyone loved him. He always had a joke to tell to make someone smile or laugh. He loved playing the guitar and going to the park. He worked for Francis McBride Wall Coverings as a wall paper hanger, and served in the U.S. Navy. He had a heart of gold and a wonderful soul, and a kind, loving, and sweet spirit. With his laugh and his smile, he helped ease the pain and suffering of many. Now he is at peace, free from his own pain and suffering. When you love someone, every moment is shadowed by the fear of loss. The more you loved, the more you feel the loss. His death leaves a giant hole in the hearts of his many family members and friends. Today we are not saying goodbye, but only saying we will see you again. He is survived by his brother, Steven Humphreys of McKeesport and his sister, Sally Humphreys of McKeesport, also by his beloved pets, Max, Abigal, and Maggie, who loved him with all their hearts. The Yorkies were the joy of his life. Born in Pittsburgh, August 12, 1925, she was a retired stenographer at the University of Pittsburgh and was employed by McQuiston and Gibson, Engineers; Harbison-Walker Refractories; and by the family business, R.A. Foster and Son in McKeesport. A graduate of Westinghouse High School, she was a member of Kephart United Methodist Church, and was superintendent of its Sunday school; was a member of A.A.R.P., Wimodausis, McKeesport Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed card clubs with her many friends, but mostly enjoyed her home, cooking, and her family. Daughter of the late Donald C. and Margaret Lintelman Steffler; wife of the late Alexander D. Foster; mother of the late Alexander D. Foster, Jr.; sister of the late Donald Steffler and Gwendolyn (Lloyd) Murray; she is survived by her daughter, Susan Jane (Todd) Moses of New Kensington, with whom she resided; 4 grandsons, Alexander D.
