James E. Johnson, Jr. “Peanuts,” 75, of McKeesport, departed this life peacefully on Sunday, March 7, 2021. He was born July 2, 1945 in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He was the son of the late James E. and Katie L. Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his older brother Charles R. “The Governor” (Cleo) Johnson.

James retired from the United States Navy after 21 years of service. He was a Mortician at the Surburban Funeral Home in South Carolina. James loved music, he was the guitar player of the Elords and the Soul Steppers band.

James is survived by his wife Barbara J. Johnson; sons, Garland Bennett of Silver Spring, Maryland; James E. (Thenica) Johnson, III of Pittsburgh; daughters, Alisa  (Oscar) Johnson of McKeesport, Sabrina (Johnathan) Houston of Verona; siblings, Georgette (Late Willie) Williams, Rev. Terry F. (Carol) Johnson, both of Clairton, Bessie James (Sam) Johnson of Newport News, Virginia, Shirley J. (Howard) Booker, Frankie E. (Patricia) both of McKeesport; sister-in-law, Ann Brown and Jackie Copeland; brother-in-law Kenneth Mapheny, all of South Carolina; 12 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; uncle Charles (Dorothy) Coger of Winston Salem, North Carolina; host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; especially best friends Mr. Wilbert Gaines of South Carolina and Billy aka Juice of McKeesport.

Jeffrey Clark Marshall

On December 30, 1959, Jeffrey Clark Marshall was born to the late Redina Ann Fletcher.  He departed this temporal life on Sunday, February 28, 2021.

Jeff graduated from McKeesport High School in 1977 and attended the University of Pittsburgh for 3 years with studies in Engineering.  Jeff later attended ICM School of Business and earned an Associate in Applied Science, Major in Computer Science.  He worked for Federated Hermes Investment Company for 26 years, starting as a Computer Operator then advancing through the company to his last position as a Senior Database Administrator.

Jeff was a dedicated husband, family man, and friend. He was a Master Mason belonging to Pride of the West Lodge #84 in McKeesport, PA.  Jeff enjoyed golfing, fishing, and traveling.  He loved attending sporting events and would travel to attend Steeler games when they played out of state.   He loved planning family vacations and celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary in Hawaii.  Jeff was known for being the grill master and in addition to his impeccable grilling skills, he was famous for making chicken salad and shrimp fried rice for his family and friends. 

Jeff was preceded in death by his late mother Redina Fletcher, step-father Harvey Fletcher, grandmother Gladys Marshall, and cousin Eric Miles.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela of 31 years, daughters Brittney and Adina, son Jeffrey “Isaiah”, three grandsons, Triston, Kingdon and Tru, granddaughter Karsyn, sister Kim, brothers Anthony and Robert “Hinkie”, and aunt Hattie Miles.  Jeff is also survived by his nephews, Anthony Jr., Quinte, Kyle, Elijah, JahShawn, and Skai, nieces Tanaya, Sade, Safiyah, Raziya, Libra, Kamryn, Ky’Layah, Kimora, and Karmen.  Jeff also leaves to mourn a host of relatives and many close friends.

Harlan E Tobe, Sr., was born July 10, 1957, to the late Horace E. and Lula Mae (Fields) Tobe in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He departed this life on February 6, 2021, at home.

Harlan graduated from Clairton High School in 1975. He was a former employee of Lenzer Coch Lines, Port Authority of Allegheny County, PRN Transit, and Community Life. Harlan retired from his passion for transportation services, where he enjoyed serving many through his extensive driving experiences.

Harlan leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Maurice Saunders, Harlan E Tobe, Jr. of McKeesport; three siblings, Anita L. Tobe of West Mifflin, Annette Halcomb and Weyman J. Tobe, Sr. of Clairton; devoted companion, Lethia Morton of McKeesport; nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.

Thelma Lee Tucker Medlin White

Thelma Lee Tucker Medlin White was born to James and Mabel Biggs Tucker, on October 30, 1928, in Moon Run, Pa. She was the oldest of 5 siblings. She departed this life peacefully in McKeesport, Pa., on January 30, 2021, with family at her bedside. In her final weeks of life, she was never without a hand to hold or a kind word to be spoken to her. Thelma’s daughter, Deborah, provided loving care and support for 10 years prior to the onset of greater illness.

Thelma is preceded in death by brothers Samuel (Jr.) Jones and Robert (Bobby) Jones; sister Dorothy McCoy; grandson Frederick D. Brown Jr.; great grandson Frederick Malcolm Brown-Goodwine. 

Thelma was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, sister and aunt. She leaves to mourn:  sister - Betty Mahaley (Long Beach, Calif.); children - Clara (Fred) Medlin Brown, Deborah White Horriat, Gary (Sylvia) White, Samuel V. White; grandchildren – Gregory (Tracey) Medlin, Marjorie Brown Adams, Gemil (Regis) White-Morse, Jamaal White, Michael (Olesia) White, Tonya (Timothy) Caldwell, Leandra Ferguson and Terry Ferguson; 24 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren, with one on the way. She leaves beloved nieces and nephews to mourn her passing, as well as, a host of friends.

Thelma White step-laddered her way into the field of nursing. She was a nurse’s aide, an LPN and receive her BSN from Penn State University, where she was deemed an honors student. In the pursuit of her education, she moved to Delaware to obtain a Masters in Gerontology. She received her master’s in nursing from the University of Delaware and presented her papers at a Veteran’s Administration Conference in Los Angeles, Calif.

Norma Jean Johnson

Norma Jean Johnson, 75, was born January 19, 1946, in Elizabeth, PA.  The beloved daughter of the late Timothy and Ruth (Woods) Johnson, departed this life on January 27, 2021 at UPMC Shadyside. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Margo Johnson.

Norma Jean grew up in Elizabeth, the eldest of the 4 daughters of Timothy and Ruth, graduated from Elizabeth Forward High School. After graduation, she obtained a position at Mobil Oil in McKees Rocks. A short while later, she obtained employment at US Steel in downtown Pittsburgh. She spent the remainder of her career with US Steel until she retired.

Norma Jean enjoyed reading and she often visited the library. Walking was a favorite activity for both exercise and as a fundraiser for charities. She also enjoyed line dancing which enabled her to be active and maintain friendships. She loved to travel both home and abroad, from the Mediterranean to Mexico. Even around the United States, her destinations included, the Grand Canyon and New Orleans as well as her last venture which was an Alaskan cruise.

Leonard “Curly” Spence, 79, of Homestead, Pennsylvania, departed this life peacefully on  Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at the VA Hospital in Aspinwall.

He was born October 11, 1941, in Clairton, Pennsylvania to the late John and Cora Strong Spence. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Janie, Petro, John, Roosevelt, Eddie, Harvey, Littleton, and  Oleter Spence-Jacobs, stepchildren, Dewayne, and Shawn.  

Curly spent most of his life working as a Machine Operator until he retired. He was a veteran, who served in the United States Army.

He leaves to mourn his loving memories, daughter, Mona (Spence) Sizemore of Penn Hills, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Lauren, Corey, Shawn & Robbie; two great-grandchildren, Zara  &  Zemora; sister, Reba King Booker of Queens, New York; son-in-law, Robert E. William John Henry, 76, was born April 18, 1944, in McKeesport, PA. The beloved son of the late John Hubert Bray, Richard J. Henry III (stepfather), and Dorothy Mae (Baker) Henry departed this life on January 17, 2021, at UPMC McKeesport. Johnny, as he was known as, retired from U.S. Steel, Irvin Works Plant where he held a variety of positions for almost 40 years.

When at all possible; you would see him pulling up to the coffee shop, with a ball cap on and driving a Cadillac. He loved his daughters, granddaughters and the Pittsburgh steelers.

He was a member of the United Steelworkers Union. Johnny is survived by his ex-wife, Dayle (Obradovich) Henry; two daughters, Michelle Elaine (Raheem) Muhammad and Denise Henry (Thomas) Barnes of McKeesport, PA; 3 grandchildren; Tommi Lynn Barnes, Mulana Anjail and Naylah Elaine Muhammad; brothers, Richard J. IV of Fort Wayne, IN, Michael (Darlene) of Elizabeth, Keith Henry of McKeesport, John and Marlowe Bray of McKeesport. Sisters, Audrey (Kenneth) Hamlin of Clairton, Sharryl (Richard) Kokoska of Port Vue, Carol Bennett, Danella, Phyllis, Loretta, Sherlyn (Lamont) Butler, Yvonne and Shelarise Bray of McKeesport.
