James E. Johnson, Jr. “Peanuts,” 75, of McKeesport, departed this life peacefully on Sunday, March 7, 2021. He was born July 2, 1945 in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He was the son of the late James E. and Katie L. Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his older brother Charles R. “The Governor” (Cleo) Johnson.

James retired from the United States Navy after 21 years of service. He was a Mortician at the Surburban Funeral Home in South Carolina. James loved music, he was the guitar player of the Elords and the Soul Steppers band.

James is survived by his wife Barbara J. Johnson; sons, Garland Bennett of Silver Spring, Maryland; James E. (Thenica) Johnson, III of Pittsburgh; daughters, Alisa  (Oscar) Johnson of McKeesport, Sabrina (Johnathan) Houston of Verona; siblings, Georgette (Late Willie) Williams, Rev. Terry F. (Carol) Johnson, both of Clairton, Bessie James (Sam) Johnson of Newport News, Virginia, Shirley J. (Howard) Booker, Frankie E. (Patricia) both of McKeesport; sister-in-law, Ann Brown and Jackie Copeland; brother-in-law Kenneth Mapheny, all of South Carolina; 12 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; uncle Charles (Dorothy) Coger of Winston Salem, North Carolina; host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; especially best friends Mr. Wilbert Gaines of South Carolina and Billy aka Juice of McKeesport.

Richard C. Jeffers, age 91, of Jefferson Hills, passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at Jefferson Hospital. He retired as the head custodian for the West Jefferson Hills School District. An Air Force veteran serving during the Korean War, he loved playing cornhole, cards and puzzle books, and enjoyed watching Pittsburgh sports. Born May 8, 1929 in Elrama, he was a son of the late Joseph B. and Vera (Crownover) Jeffers. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Charolette (Gill) Jeffers; daughter, Phylis Jeffers of Jefferson Hills; sons, Scott (Cheryl) Jeffers of Monongahela and Stephen (Darlene) Jeffers of Elizabeth Twp.; grandchildren, Lucas Jeffers, Taylor Jeffers, Tyler (Alyssa) Settelmaier, Brianna Ketzler and Derek Ketzler; four great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth; brother, Ronald; also, nieces and nephews.

Phillips, Jr. and Veronica (Grabill) Phillips.  A retired supervisor of technical services for CCI Wireless in Monroeville, William was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in White Oak, a past president of the Norwin Soccer Club, and a volunteer for the Tube City Media Online in McKeesport.  He is survived by his wife Rebecca "Becky" (Rowles) Phillips, his son William H. (Natasha) Phillips, IV of McKeesport, his sister Susan (Tim) Walters of White Oak, his niece Christina Walter, his brother-and-sister-in-law Eric and Edith Farst of Gulfport, FL, and his pets Simba, Gizmo, Apollo, and Gene.

She retired as an administrative assistant for CFA Architects and Planners in Pittsburgh.  Norma was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Duquesne.  She was extremely interested in genealogy and was an avid pet lover.

Anna Mae “Angie” Cartwright, 85, of North Huntingdon, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at UPMC Mercy Hospital. She was born May 4, 1935 in Braddock, a daughter of the late John and Ann (Ondo) Kolesar. Prior to her retirement, Angie was an award winning sales associate for Freight Liquidators. Later she was employed by the Salvation Army, North Huntingdon. She enjoyed embroidery and crafting. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Johnny and Bernard Kolesar; and sister, Rose Mizak. She is survived by her sons, Kevin (Diane) Heshizer, Pete (Andrea) Cartwright; daughters, Colleen (Mike) Tabak, Glenda (Ron) Sekerchak, Sandy (Bob) Bante, Sue Heshizer; brother, Richard (Cindy) Kolesar; sisters, Eleanor (Don) Swanson, Mary Potochnik; grandchildren, Michael (Renee) Tabak, Melissa (Jim) Danko, Ron (Kelly) Sekerchak, Brooke (Jason) Santo Colombo, Vanessa Bante, Brittany (Adam) Plank, Bob (Jenna) Bante, Samantha (Brian) Flannery; seven great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Ryan, Reese, Jemma, Carter, Carmen, James and Gianna; and numerous nieces and nephews. Michael G. Markovich, age 72, of Port Vue, died March 9, 2021, at Jefferson Hospital. Born April 19, 1948, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late George and Mary (Katich) Markovich and the wife of Charlene (Cipriani) Markovich.
Michael retired from the Borough of Port Vue Street Department as the head foreman after 52 years. He was a graduate of the first class of South Allegheny High School in 1966 and continued to the University of Illinois School for Broadcasting. Michael was a member of the Prosveta Lodge Club, Clairton sportsman club, and Elizabeth sportsman club. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and cheering on the Steelers in his free time.

Eugenia “Jeanie” Slutyak Longcrier, age 82, of Duquesne, passed away at home on March 3, 2021. Born in Duquesne on August 3, 1938, she was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Potoma) Slutyak Sr. Jeanie was a graduate of Duquesne High School and the Robert Morris School Secretarial Division and over the years worked at Alcoa and US Steel, ultimately retiring from Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. In 1976 she married Alfred M. Longcrier and, sadly, was widowed upon his untimely death in 1982. Jeanie was a lifelong active member of the former St. Nicholas R.O. Church, Duquesne, President of the St. Nicholas R.O. Cemetery Corporation and current parishioner of St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church, McKeesport. A feisty, independent woman, with a dry sense of humor, Jeanie was dedicated to her faith, her church and her family. She was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh sports teams.

He is survived by his siblings, Terance Kurhansky of Delmont, Diane (Robert) Williams of Bethel Park and Timothy (Kathy) Kurhansky of North Huntingdon; also, nieces and nephews. H. Vaughn "Pap" Gilbert, Sr., 89, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2021. He was born August 29, 1931 in Christy Park and was the son of the late Elizabeth (Vaughn) and David S. Gilbert, Sr. He was the husband of 60 years to the late Shirley Ann (Sandmeyer) Gilbert, who passed away June 10, 2012. Vaughn was in the US Naval Reserves. He was an active member of Greenock United Methodist Church and a life member of The Central Vol. Fire Department. Vaughn was an amazing carpenter and cabinet maker and lent his talents and skills to many family members, friends, his church and firehall over the years. He was the owner of over 25 years of the former Wood Products Supply and retired as a kitchen designer at the Sutersville Lumber Company.
