Anna Susan Durik, age 98, formerly of Duquesne, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at Forbes Hospital. Anna was born on May 20, 1923, in McKeesport, to the late Andrew and Mary (Chernak) Durik. Anna graduated from Duquesne High School and Duff’s Business School. She retired from U.S. Steel-Duquesne Work as a supervisor in tabulating. She was a devout Christian and member of St. John Mark Lutheran Church in Homestead. She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Andrew P. (late Mary) Durik, John Durik, Olga (Albert) Gould, and Irene Durik and her great nephew, Dillon Clutter. Anna is survived by niece, Mary Jane (Larry) Zadonick, nephew, Jay Gould, niece, Gloria (Eugene) Tutera and niece, Lois (Glenn) Clutter; great nephews, Aaron Zadonick, Michael (Janelle) Tutera, Ryan (Carey) Tutera and Marshall Clutter; and great-great nephews, John and David Tutera. There is no visitation. Services will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at 12:00 Noon, at the McKeesport-Versailles Cemetery, with Boniface officiating. Florence E. “Flo” Husfelt, age 85, of West Mifflin, passed away on Tuesday, October 19, 2021,at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Born in Duquesne on July 8, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John and Maria (Tkacik) Brecko. Flo was a retired administrative assistant from Carnegie Mellon University. She was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish-Holy Trinity Church, she loved her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed going to church and card games. Glen E. “Mr. Duquesne” Smith Sr., age 65, of Duquesne, Sunrise-September 2, 1956-Sunset, October 8, 2021. Born in Duquesne, he was the son of the late Meredith and Jessie (Grace) Smith. Glen worked as a custodian for the Duquesne School District, was a cement finisher for Ben’s Constructions, worked as a groundskeeper at Kennywood and retired from McDonald’s in the maintenance department.

He was a member of Payne Chapel in Duquesne. Leo J. Niemczycki, age 93, of West Mifflin, passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2021. Son of the late Walenty and Josephine (Dragan) Niemczycki, he was born in Duquesne on August 10, 1928. Leo started his career as a Letter Carrier at the Duquesne Post Office and finished his 45 year career as the Superintendent of Mail at the Duquesne Post Office. He enjoyed boating, reading and traveling (he and his wife had gone to Egypt, England, Italy, Holland, France, Hawaii) and he volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War, was a member of the Quarter Master Corps while in the Army and was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, St. Hedwig Church. He was the beloved husband of Anna (Adamcik) Niemczycki for 41 years; brother of the late Wanda (late Stephen) Ciborowski, late Emily (late Robert) Catto; late niece Emily Mateya. Besides his wife, he is survived by nieces, Mary (late Dennis) Shuplock of Shaler Twp., and Stephanie (Bill) McGlumphy of Dover, DE; sister-in-law Patricia (Fred) Bowden of West Mifflin; and many great nieces and nephews and great-great nephews. Born in West Mifflin on June 8, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Philomena (Bost) Schaff. She was a retired accountant from McKamish, Inc. and a member of St. Agnes Church of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. She is survived by her sisters, Dolores P. “Duz” Schaff of West Mifflin, with whom she resided, Donna (late Joseph) Milko of West Mifflin and Diane “Bunny” (Edward) Lanyi of Latrobe, and dear friend Fran Barron of West Mifflin. She is also survived by Nieces and Nephews and Great Nieces and Great Nephews. There will be no visitation. Esther Blotzer, age 97, of Munhall, formerly of Duquesne, passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2021.

In her younger years, Esther was an avid spectator at all of her grandchildren’s sporting events. At 97, she was still enjoying playing cards, especially Euchre, and the game of dominoes. She was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan and never missed an episode of Sean Hannity. Her favorite pastime was shopping and she also enjoyed cooking and baking. Her homemade bread was everyone’s favorite. She also did clerical work at the Duquesne Senior Citizens Center for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Herman Kress, her husband, James Blotzer, sisters, Pearl and Edith and a brother, Bill, her sons-in-law, Charles Teichart (who lovingly dubbed her Queen Mother) and James Steiner and her granddaughter Jillann Tockstein.

Esther leaves to cherish her memory her three daughters, Joanne Steiner of West Mifflin, Joyce Blotzer of West Mifflin, Esther Teichart of Trenton, MI and a son, James (Cheri) Blotzer of Sheffield Lake, OH; grandchildren, Joyann (Joe) Drumm, James (Holly) Steiner, Jan (Greg) McNamara, Richard (Jodi) Barker, Charles (Ashley) Teichart, Joanne (Jim) Kraeuter, James (Olivia), Ryan (Alissa) and Devin Blotzer; great grandchildren, Brittany, Tony, Joyann, Samara, Alyssa, Jimmy, Shelby, Kayla, Klay, Kody, Jonathon, Jameson, Justin, Jaclyn, Madison, Zach, Jordyn, Isabella and Bennett; and great-great grandchildren, Waylon, Braden, Lexi, Camron, Braxton, Frankie, Emilio, Jayden and Cadence.

James F. Dittman, Sr., 90 years old, of West Mifflin, passed away on September 30, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Rella B. (Grooms) and Jerome J. Dittman, brothers Thomas and Rev. Bernard Dittman, and his beloved wife of 63 years Joan B. (Leskovitz) Dittman. He is survived by his children, Jerome (Beth) of Mesquite, TX, James, Jr. of South Park, Marianne Terrazas of Fountain Hills, AZ, Robert (Karen) of Irwin, Bernard (Krisha) of Westminster, MD, Linda of West Mifflin, Cynthia (Dr. Ken Fasanella) Dittman of Allison Park, and Susan Gamble of Shadyside; grandchildren Angela (Zach) Egbert, Jennifer (Jesse) Buenrostro, Victor Terrazzas, James Dittman, Dr. Lauren Dittman, Thomas Dittman, Jessica (Dr. Chuck) Gabbert, Ryan Long, Jillian Long, Rebecca Long, Margo Gamble and Isaac Gamble; six great-grandchildren, Luke and Madeline Egbert, Bethany Buenrostro, Nora and Riley Gabbert; brother, Jerome (Helen) Dittman. Jim was an Army veteran, serving in Europe during the Korean War. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and overall outdoorsman. In retirement, he throughly enjoyed his role as a grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed the many birds, squirrels and deer that visited his yard and back porch. He took pride in his many different types of flowers that he grew. Jim was a graduate of Duquesne High School. He was a hard worker, many times working three jobs to support his family of eight children. Jim worked for Noble J. Dick, Linde Air Products, Levine Hardware and UPMC Montefiore Hospital, where he retired as a purchasing manager. John Paul Byrnes, December 26, 1916-September 23, 2021, of West Mifflin. Three months shy of his 105th birthday, John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his daughters, on Thursday, September 23, 2021. John was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie (Horten) Byrnes of 57 years, his parents, Emmett and Marie Byrnes and eight of his ten siblings, Bill (88), Andy (97), Betsy Gill (85), Bob (104), Elaine (100), Joe (91), Richard (28) and Jimmy (85). Those left behind to celebrate his life are his three daughters, Pam (late Rick) DeBor of South Park, Joyce (Bob) Dowd of Canonsburg and Rita Byrnes of West Mifflin; granddaughter, Heather (Kevin) Pazandak and two great grandsons, Everett and Nolan Pazandak of Rogers, MN; and his two remaining siblings, Patrick of Ohio and Carmine Lieb of Nicktown, PA. As a young man, John worked in the coal mines of Hastings Fuel Company, drilling, setting charges and blasting coal. In January 1942, at the age of 25, John enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was assigned to the 35th Materials Squadron, stationed in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant in November 1945, having received a Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, 4 Bronze Stars and the WWII Victory Medal. In 1948, John and Marjorie moved to Duquesne and eventually West Mifflin where John worked for the USS Irvin Works until he retired. John lived a long life, which was ironic as he cheated death on numerous occasions. Quarantined four times in his lifetime for the Spanish Flu of 1918, diphtheria, scarlet fever and more recently Covid 19. He was also a 20 plus year survivor of colon cancer. John showed his family how to persevere in difficult times as he lived through the depression, a World War, and most recently a Pandemic. Dad, know that your daughters appreciate all the sacrifices you and mom made for us, that we will miss you, but, most of all, that you are Both loved. Until we meet again, may God hold you Both in his loving arms. He was a school bus driver for 1st Student for the Jeannette School District, a member of the V.F.W. in Irwin and liked to golf. He served his country in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War where he received a Purple Heart and later joined the Army. He is the father of Douglas C.
