Joanna M. Hawthorne, age 60, of West Newton, died November 3, 2017, at home. Born November 28, 1956, in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Edward W. and Rose Marie (Kelly) Stash and the wife of Bill Hawthorne, of West Newton. Joanna dedicated her life to caring for her family. In addition to her husband, Joanna is survived by her children, Joanna May Polisena of Cleveland, OH and Jeremy Scott Lewis of Hanover, PA; grandchildren, Edward “Willy” and Channing Polisena both of Cleveland, OH, Rodryck H. Drapeau of Ontario, Canada and Ashley N. Carman; siblings, Edward W. (Pat) Stash of McKeesport, Andrew Jackson Coulter of Murrysville, Rose Mary Wernt of Erie and Anna Desroche of Vidor, TX. Patricia J. Sawyer, age 81, of Wilmerding, died September 26, 2017, at South Western Nursing Home. Born November 24, 1935, in Wilmerding, she was the wife of the late Thomas Sawyer. Patricia dedicated her life to caring for her son and husband. She had a passion for music and truly loved Elvis Presley. Patricia is survived by her son, Thomas Sawyer; and dear friend, Louise C. Atkins. A graveside memorial service will be held on October 11, 2017, 10 a.m., at the Richland Cemetery. Father Matthew Elanjileth will officiate. Inurnment will follow. Edward A. “Moe” Kane

Edward A. “Moe” Kane, age 84 of Dravosburg, died October 1, 2017 at UPMC McKeesport. Born May 20, 1933 in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Edward P. and Lula “Lucy” (Rodman) Kane. Edward honorably served in the US Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, he began working for the Union Railroad Transportation Division having retired after 35 years of dedicated service. He faithfully attended Holy Spirit Catholic Church in West Mifflin and was a past Eucharist Minister at St. Martin de Porres. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree #955 and also American Legion Post 361. He is survived by his special niece, Mary Ann Kane of McKeesport; and many other loving nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, James E. P. Kane and Henry F. Kane; and sisters, Rita C. Gilligan and Sara Rodman. There will be no viewing per Ed’s wishes, however family and friends will be received at Willig Funeral Home & Crematory on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 10-10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Father Patrick C. Barkey will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the White Oak Animal Safe Haven.
