Daniel M. "Shakey" Mali, 72, of Liberty Boro, died peacefully on Saturday, September 30, 2017 in Riverside Nursing Center, McKeesport. Born January 12, 1945 in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Michael and Mary (Demko) Mali. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Duquesne and Saint Mark Parish, Liberty Boro. Mr. Mali was a former employee of the former Duquesne Works, U.S. Steel Corporation and was a retired employee of the Veterans Hospital, Highland Drive, Pittsburgh. Danny was a proud U. S. Marine Veteran, having served in Cuba, Santa Domingo, and two tours in Vietnam, He was a Purple Heart recipient. He also volunteered at Mount St. Macrina, and SS. Peter and Paul Church. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann (Kebles) Mali, a sister, Mildred M. Dorko, formerly of Munhall, two sisters-in-law, Deborah Kebles and Wendy Hoak, both of McKeesport, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary M. Artuso, 75, of Elizabeth Township, died Saturday, September 30, 2017 at home. She was born August 14, 1942 in Pittsburgh and was the daughter of the late Martin "Regis" and Clara Keddie Flaherty. She was the wife of the late Vincent R. Artuso who died February 9, 2017. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Christy Park and was a retired school teacher from the Wilkinsburg School District. She taught English, Reading and Drama. Mary was a member of the Democratic State Committee, member and retired director of PSEA-PACE,Western Region PSEA, Past NEA Democratic Caucus President, Past PSEA Caucus President, and was also a former Assistant Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America. She is survived by her son, Philip R. Artuso of West Newton, brother, John (Cat) Flaherty of Silver Spring, MD, sisters, Rita (Henry) Jordan of Elizabeth Township, Jane (Guy) Zumpetta of Mantua, OH, and Ann (David) Loeffler of Cadorus, and many nieces and nephews.

Russell Brown, 90, of Elizabeth Twp., passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 1, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Russell retired as a craneman at U.S. Steel Irvin Works after 42 years and was an Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He was a longtime member of Central Highlands Community United Methodist Church where he was a member of the dart ball team. He enjoyed his family, friends, woodworking, feeding the birds, and vacationing with his wife in Erie. He will be fondly remembered for his kindness and helpfulness to all who knew him in his neighborhood.

Edward A. “Moe” Kane, age 84 of Dravosburg, died October 1, 2017 at UPMC McKeesport. Born May 20, 1933 in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Edward P. and Lula “Lucy” (Rodman) Kane. Edward honorably served in the US Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, he began working for the Union Railroad Transportation Division having retired after 35 years of dedicated service. He faithfully attended Holy Spirit Catholic Church in West Mifflin and was a past Eucharist Minister at St. Martin de Porres. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree #955 and also American Legion Post 361. He is survived by his special niece, Mary Ann Kane of McKeesport; and many other loving nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, James E. P. Kane and Henry F. Kane; and sisters, Rita C. Gilligan and Sara Rodman. There will be no viewing per Ed’s wishes, however family and friends will be received at Willig Funeral Home & Crematory on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 10-10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Father Patrick C. Barkey will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the White Oak Animal Safe Haven. Herbert Kees Howell, 89, of Elizabeth Township, died Saturday, September 30, 2017. He was born September 4, 1928 in Elizabeth Township and was the son of the late David and Sarah Jane Belsar Howell.
Herb was the only student in first grade at the Harmony One Room School, then went on to Wylie School, and then graduated from Elizabeth High School in 1946. During his junior year of high school he left at 1pm and worked until 10 pm during World War II at Jones and Laughlin Steel in Port Vue. Herb was a member of the PA National Guard Unit “Pittsburgh” during the Korean War.
In 1946, Herb would start his own business as a bricklayer, the business would grow over the years to become Howell Marble, Mantel and Stone Company and in 1995 would become Howell Craft, Inc., and is still located at 591 Simpson-Howell Road with 12 employees. He was a member of Central Highland Community United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the planning committee for the new addition of the church, was past president of the administrative board and was also a Sunday school teacher. He was past president and a lifetime member of the Central Volunteer Fire Company.

Marie Virginia Killian Race, 86, of Elizabeth Township, died Friday, September 29. 2017. She was born November 17, 1930 at home on 28th Street in Christy Park and was the daughter of the late Peter and Marie Kreson Killian. She was the wife of the late Thomas Edward Race, Jr. who passed away March 15, 2013. They were married for 60 years. She was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Romanian Byzantine Church, Christy Park, where she was a former choir director, and bulletin preparer. She also designed pass outs and announcements, participated in cooking dinners, bake sales, bingos and various other money raising projects. Marie was active in International Village, She took part in the first festivity in 1960, and helped design Romanian floats and booths until 1975. At the 2009 Village, Marie was recognized for having designed the first International Village symbol in 1960 and was honored and given a "key to the city" from Mayor Brewster.
