Frank P. Miriello, age 91, of North Versailles, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2017. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea that went on to work in the payroll department of the Post Office in Pittsburgh for over 40 years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW in East McKeesport and the American Legion in White Oak and was an avid bowler that enjoyed events with the Senior Bowlers in North Versailles. He is preceded in death by his parents Francesco A. and Cecelia (Weis) Miriello; and brothers Alfred, Richard, Leonard and Eugene Miriello. He is survived by his wife of over 67 years Dorothea L. (Mitchell) Miriello; children David F. (Suzann) Miriello and Lisa F. (Karl Probola) Miriello; grandson Anton Raphael (Rachel) Miriello; and brothers Raymond and Kenneth (Mary) Miriello.

He was born December 7, 1929 in McKeesport to the late Bert and Elizabeth (Pogyor) Heyz and was also preceded in death by his wife Corrine (Dvorsky) Heyz and his brother Richard W. Heyz. He worked as a general superintendent for the Dick Corporation. He was a Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Holy Trinty Lutheran Church; Shidle Lodge 601 F & A.M., Bromas Club, AASR, Valley of Pittsburgh Syria Temple, Tall Cedars and enjoyed bowling and golf. Beloved wife of Bernard J. Runge for 65 years; mother of Wilma (Edward) Krien, of White Oak, Robert Runge, of West Mifflin, and LouAnn (Robert) Kraus, of Warrenton, VA; grandmother of Shanna Krien, Brandon Krien, Keith (Jen) Kraus, and Courtney Kraus; great-grandmother of Collin Krien.

She was predeceased by brothers, William Boyer, Raymond Boyer, and Sylvester “Red” Boyer. Visitation           on Monday from 2-8 p.m. at the MALOY-SCHLEIFER FUNERAL HOME, 915 Kennedy Ave., Duquesne, 412-466-3300, where a Blessing Service will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph’s Church at 10 a.m. Rev. Age 96, of Duquesne and former resident of McKeesport, died on September 7, 2017, in St. Anne's Nursing Home, Greensburg, PA. She was born on January 9, 1921, in McKeesport to Michael and Virginia (Coulter) Kushner and was the oldest of five children. On October 26, 1946, she married Stanley Belback. Together they were loving parents of four sons and three daughters. Madeline was an active member at St. Joseph Church, Duquesne where she belonged to the Confraternity of Christian Mothers and Guild, and was a Third Order Carmelite in the "Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Chapter" for 36 years. She also belonged to Our Lady's Rosary Makers, was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, and a volunteer at John J. Kane Hospital for 13 years at the Scott Twp. and McKeesport centers. She was a former Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) teacher of religion, and a teacher for Catholic Awards for Girl Scouts of Catholic Faith. She also served on the Home Mass Committee for shut-ins. She is survived by her children, Stanley (Theresa) Belback, Lanexa, VA, Marlene (Stephen) Smith, North Huntingdon, PA, Anita (John) King, Mineral, VA, Regis (Marianne) Belback, Steubenville, OH, John (Valerie) Belback, West Mifflin, PA, Virginia Belback, Williamsville, NY, Joseph (Robin) Belback, North Huntingdon, PA; 13 grandchildren and one step- grandchild; 16 great- grandchildren; sister, Catherine Crovak, Greensburg, PA; and many nieces and nephews. Madeline was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley "Stush" Belback; parents, Michael and Virginia (Coulter) Kushner; brother, Michael S. Kushner; sisters, Virginia (Ernest) Williams, and Rita (Walter) Belback. Madeline was a woman of great Faith who had an abundance of love for her husband, children, family, and friends with sincere caring and compassion for others. We'll all miss her! Kenneth Banner, age 69 of McKeesport, formerly of Pittsburgh, died September 7, 2017 at his home. Born March 24, 1948 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Wilbur Allen and Janet (Kenny) Nicholson. Ken devoted his time working as a McKeesport professional drug counselor at First Step Recovery for many years. After retirement, Ken started his own recovery program called Resources Unlimited where he dedicated his life to helping others overcome. He spent hours volunteering for the AARP Hunger Services Food Bank in Wilkinsburg continuing his ministry to help others. He is survived by his children, Renee Clark-Smith and Chris Sowell; brothers, Clifford Nicholson and Donald Nicholson; sister, Valerie Williams; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery, 321 Kittanning Pike, Sharpsburg, PA 15215. Rev. William P. Wood, 83, of North Huntingdon, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday September 6, 2017. He was born December 29, 1933 in McKeesport, a son of the late Emmett and Agnes (Bumbarger) Wood and was also preceded in death by a brother Robert Wood. Bill was a graduate of McKeesport High School and received his bachelor’s degree in Theology from Nyack College, Nyack, NY. He served as a Pastor in Christian & Missionary Alliance Churchs for thirty nine years. He served Somerset Alliance Church from 1959 to 1965, Blairsville Alliance Church from 1965 to 1976 and then served as Director of Development at the Christian & Missionary Alliance, Western Pennsylvania District Office from 1976 to 1984. He served as Pastor of Norwin Alliance Church, North Huntingdon, from 1984 until his retirement in 1999 then served as interim pastor after retirement.

BERNARD F. DWOREK, JR., 79, known as “Butch” or “Bernie”, died at home Sept. 7, 2017.  He is the son of the late Bernard and Emily (Krukowski) Dworek, and devoted husband to his beloved wife Carol, who preceded him in death.   He is also preceded by sister Emily Rusnock and brother William “Bill” Dworek.   Butch was the Daddy of Lisa (Daniel) Hommel, of Monroeville, proud PapPap of Matthew and Benny, and “big brother” to cousin Michelle Vancas and her family.   Butch was a police officer in Glassport for over 40 years, capping his career as Chief of Police before retiring in 1999.   As Police Chief, he coordinated many activities for children, including the popular Annual Fishing Contest, as well as food drives and Christmas activities partnered (through his wife, Carol) with the Glassport Girl Scouts.   He also assisted in her Scouting activities, and greatly enjoyed trips to Pymatuning, fishing, game nights with in-laws ’Sis’ and ‘Budg’, time with “the Kids”, and watching his grandsons perform in musicals.  He belonged to Queen of the Rosary Parish, the Fraternal Order of Police, Citizen Hose Co. #2, and the Oldtimers Baseball Club.   After retirement, he became a bus monitor for special needs children, known to coworkers and kids as “Mr. Bernie”.   Butch and his ’soulmate’ Carol were always a team;  he steadfastly cared for her at home during her prolonged battle with complications from renal failure until her death in 2013.  Friends will be received at Wojciechowski Funeral Home, Glassport, Sat. 6-8 and Sun. 2-4 and 6-8.   A funeral Mass will be held Mon. 10:00 a.m. at Queen of the Rosary Parish with Rev. Miroslaus Wojcicki.  Internment will follow at Round Hill Cemetary.

They were married for 61 years. She was a member of St. Patrick Parish in Christy Park and was also a member of the Ladies Guild and Resurrection Society. She was also a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in North Huntingdon. She was the proprietor of her own in home beauty shop and had worked for US Steel Christy Park Works testing bomb shells during WWII. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Mary (Gery) Stafford of Gaithersburg, MD, son, Daniel Francis ( Karen Jean) O'Connell of Severna Park, MD, sisters, Jean Conn of White Oak and Elaine Jackson of Irwin, grandchildren, Jeremy, Meghan, and Ross Stafford and Daniel O'Connell, sisters-in-law, Mabel Bauer and Jane Bauer, nieces and nephews.

Kathy Tomas, 86, of Lenexa, KS, formerly of Duquesne, PA, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2017, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Zaborsko Selo, Croatia, to Mijo and Jela Smenderovac. In 1955, she married her late husband Michael and they had two children before the family immigrated to the United States and settled in Duquesne in 1973. After her husband passed, Kathy moved to Lenexa to stay with her daughter who compassionately cared for her to the end. She was retired from Riverview Center-Jewish Senior Assisted Living Center - Pittsburgh, PA, where she worked as a seamstress for almost 20 years. Kathy loved flowers and enjoyed sewing, needlepointing and gardening. She was a loving, generous and kind person who enjoyed her family and little children. She could light-up a room with a most beautiful smile and, even in her most difficult moments, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren could bring a smile to her face.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and a sister.

 

Kathy is survived by her daughter Mary (Walter) Rendulic; son David (Carla) Tomas; grandchildren Adam and Maria Tomas and Monica (Carlos) Bello; great-grandchildren Julian and Adrian Bello; brother-in-law John (Josephine) Baic; sister-in-law Marica (late Drago) Spudic; and the late Josip (Micika) Tomas and nieces and nephews.

 

The family would like to thank Dr. Peter Holt and the St. Luke’s Hospice staff of Kansas City for their exceptional care, compassion and support.
