 Andrew P. “Phil” Sobczak, age 57 of Port Vue, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at his home. Born May 10, 1959 in McKeesport, he was the son of Raymond M. Sobczak and the late Mary E. (Chapaylo) Sobczak. Andrew was a graduate of Rosedale Technical Institute specializing in automotive mechanics and diesel technology. He was a certified PA state inspection mechanic currently working as an automotive fleet technician for Iron City Uniform Co. in Pittsburgh. He was a long time member of Corpus Christi Parish, formerly St. Mary Czestochowa Parish. In addition to his father, he is survived by his brother, Dennis R. (the late Lynn) Sobczak of Elizabeth; nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews. Mary M. Mika, age 93, of McKeesport, died on August 7, 2016 at UPMC McKeesport.  Born November 28, 1922 in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Ignatius and Mary (Yasewich) Reznar, and the wife of the late Joseph S. Mika.  She is survived by her daughters, Donna J. (Cliff) Smith, of Castle Shannon, Mary V. (William) Marshall, of McKeesport, and Gloria A. Miller, of McKeesport; grandchildren; Kenneth and Richard Smith, Rachel and Mallory Marshall, and Trevor Miller; also survived by nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her son, Joseph S. Mika, Jr.; brothers, Stanley and Eddie Przybyla.  Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church.  Fr. Gertrude M. Himich, age 92 of McKeesport, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on August 5, 2016.  She was born on February 12, 1924 in McKeesport and was the daughter of the late Frank and Gertrude (Lewandowski) Kulczynski and the wife of the late Michael Himich.  Gertrude worked for Murphy’s Warehouse and the Carnegie Library of McKeesport.  She loved Polkas and most of all, spending time with her family.  She is survived by her sons, Dale (Debbie) and Michael (Carol) Himich; daughters, Barbara (Thomas) Kostovny, of West Mifflin and Susan (Thom) Himich; grandchildren, Shawn (Stacey), Christina, Diana, Christopher, Melissa, Amber (Steve), Michael, Daniel, and Joseph; great-grandson, Shawn, Jr., and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her son, David; granddaughter, April; brothers, Harry, Edward, Frank, Raymond and Donald; sister, Betty.  Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Sunday from 2-9 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, 11 a.m., at Corpus Christi Church.  Fr. Mary Ann Tassone, age 55, of West Newton, formerly of Brentwood, was freed from her battle with cystic fibrosis on August 1, 2016 at UPMC Presbyterian. Born December 20, 1960 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Dorothy (Stiles) Hoffman and proud wife of Larry Tassone for 28 years. Mary Ann was a certified esthetician, however her greatest joy was being a homemaker and mother. She was truly a "real life Betty Crocker", and will be remembered for her amazing cooking and baking. She also enjoying spending time fishing with her husband and feeding the bunnies that would visit her in her backyard. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Lauren Marie Tassone, of home; siblings, Edward Hoffman, Patti Gilmore, Doris Papariella and Kathy Bryer; mother-in-law, Phyllis Tassone; father-in-law, Joseph Tassone; brother-in-law, Joseph Tassone; sister-in-law, Jennifer Lazaris; nephews, Josh, Jason, Shane and Cole Tassone; nieces, Kattie and Samantha Jones; and many other nieces, nephews and friends. Carrozza, age 88 of North Huntingdon, formerly of North Versailles, passed away at home on July 30, 2016.  Born June 12, 1928 in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Helen Zuccarillo and wife of the late Anthony Carrozza.  Rose was retired from the East Allegheny School District, and she also worked for various doctor offices as well as McKeesport Hospital.  She was a member of the Palenese Women’s Club of Christy Park and a former swimming instructor at the McKeesport YMCA.  She was a Steelers fanatic and had a love of old movies, crime shows, game shows, and rooted for the underdog, such as her previously deceased dog Scrapper.  She is survived by her daughters, Paula Carrozza, of Virginia Beach, VA and Linda Mitchell, of North Huntingdon; grandson, Ryan (Sanya Sandhal) Honick, of Chicago, IL; brother-in-law Bernard Carrozza.  Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Monday, August 1, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, 10 a.m., at St. Agnes Church, North Huntingdon. Dewayne B. Spate, age 86 of White Oak, formerly of McKeesport, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2016 at Briarcliff Pavilion in North Huntingdon. Born May 12, 1930 in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Leland and Minnie (Barth) Spate, and husband of Nancy (Symington) Spate for 65 years. Dewayne honorably served our country in the US Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, he began his professional career as a photographer, working for G.C. Murphy Co., and also for The Times Observer. He was a member of the former Hope United Methodist Church. Dewayne will be remembered for being one of the biggest Civil War buffs, and he enjoyed taking his children to visit Gettysburg, where he was one of the best tour guides. He also loved all animals, especially his dog, Lucy, as well as watching and feeding the birds in his yard. Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes, and above all, he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. His games of croquet with his grandkids will never be forgotten. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Jayne (Albert Keith) Szirmae of White Oak, Jim (Cindy) Spate of McKeesport, Jon (Susan) Spate of Rostraver Twp. and Judy (Chester) Berg of Elizabeth Boro.; grandchildren, Adam, Nick, Jody, Jenny, Sandor, Jake, Andrew, Mitchell, Zac and Kendrick; nine great-grandchildren; brother, David (Vicki) Spate of Missouri; special brother-in-law Edward Toperzer; sister-in-law, Nina (Symington) Howard; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. John "Bob" Tharp

John Robert “Bob” Tharp, age 79, passed away at home surrounded by his family on July 25, 2016.  Born December 27, 1936 in Waynesburg, he was the son of the late Abner and Mildred (Tustin) Tharp and the beloved husband of 44 years to Carol (Kaiser) Tharp.  Bob graduated from Waynesburg High School in 1956.  He went on to work as a Radiologic Technician at Greene County Memorial Hospital, McKeesport Hospital, Homestead Hospital, and retired from Jefferson Regional Medical Center.  He served in the Army Reserves for 9 years and was an active member of Evangelical Congregational Church (McKeesport) and their ARFOM Class Organization.  His other memberships included Masonic Youghiogheny Lodge #583, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Al-O-Mon Forest #138, and the Mon Yough Church Dartball League.  He volunteered for McKeesport Meals on Wheels and enjoyed gardening, dartball, and taking care of his grandchildren.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by son, Brian (Stacey) Tharp, or Monroeville; triplet grandchildren, Benjamin, Holden, and Kylen; brother, Charles Raymond Tharp, of Waynesburg; sisters, Erma Jean Carroll, of Belle Vernon, Martha Grim, of Windridge, Sarah (Orville) King, of Waynesburg and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his brother Barton at six years of age.  Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. and on Thursday, July 28, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.  The funeral service will be held on Friday, July 28, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Evangelical Congregational Church in McKeesport.  Rev. Stanley P. Horvat, age 61 of Elizabeth Twp., formerly of West Mifflin, passed on Friday, July 15, 2016 at UPMC Presbyterian. Born July 17, 1954 in McKeesport, he was the son of the late John and Helen (Hamar) Horvat, and beloved husband of Sharon (Raymer) Horvat. Stanley was employed with US Steel Duquesne Works, where he worked in the accounting department for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus as a 3rd degree Knight and was a longtime member of St. Michael Parish in Elizabeth. He was a devoted grandfather who loved to spend time with all of his grandkids, especially collecting football cards for them to enjoy. In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by his children, Matthew (Jaime) Horvat of Brentwood, Erica (Glenn) Ace of White Oak, Nicolle (Allen) Booth of Elizabeth and Kasey (Raymond) Zang of White Oak; grandchildren, Owen, Kayla, Tyler, Izabella, Cloè, Alexia, Brayden, Faith, Phoebe, Zavier, Stella and Quinn; brother, Alan (Sharon) Horvat of West Mifflin; sister-in-law, Linda (Dean) Gibson of Simpsonville, SC; and many nieces and nephews. Clara E. Horvath, age 94, of McKeesport, passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at The Palms of O'Neil in McKeesport.  Born October 25, 1921 in Rankin PA, she was the daughter of the late Cosimos and Maria (Salazar) Izzo, and beloved wife of the late Joseph A. Horvath.
Clara was a bookkeeper for Menzie Dairy for 30 years and was a lifelong member of St. Angela Parish in White Oak.
She is survived by her son Joseph (Barbara) Horvath of Morgantown, WV. Grandchildren include Joseph (Samantha), Christopher and Jeffrey Horvath, Josh (Angela) Mason and Jodee (Tim) Heydon. Great-grandchildren are Joseph, Harper, Abigail, Miles, Olivia and Henry; sister Esther Linderman of Mt. Vernon.  Clara was also preceded in death by her sister Eva Krol and brother Louis Izzo.

Michael Babyak

Michael Babyak, age 93 of White Oak, formerly of McKeesport, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at UPMC McKeesport. Born June 3, 1923 in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Jon and Mary Babyak, and beloved husband of Margaret (Haynick) Babyak for almost 70 years. Michael was part of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) as a young teen, and later joined the US Army where he honorably served our country during WWII. Following his military service, he worked as a general foreman for US Steel National Tube Works, retiring after many years of dedicated service. He was a member of the White Oak American Legion Post 701, AARP Chapter 2911 in Versailles and the Knights of Columbus. He was a very active member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in McKeesport and a former Holy Name Society member. Some of Michael's favorite pastimes were his trips to the mountains, taking long road trips where he always enjoyed driving, and playing all types of card games with friends and family. Above all, Michael will be remembered as being a family man who devoted his life to his loving family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Michael A. (Jenny) Babyak of Somerset and Joyce A. (Alan) Goebel of McKeesport; grandchildren, Michele Babyak (Denny Hustead) and Lynette (John) Schuetz; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Brandon Schuetz; brother, Edward (Helen) Babyak; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Jon Babyak, Mary Dolores Curley and Helen Kugler. Joan E. Gasser, age 79 of McKeesport, formerly of West Mifflin, passed Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at Riverside Care Center in McKeesport. Born January 31, 1937,  in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mabel (Hays) Fullard and the wife of the late Albert W. Gasser.
Joan was retired from the former Paule's Lookout and also the Duquesne Golf Club, where she worked as a waitress.
She enjoyed swimming, jazz music, the late great oldies and loved to play all types of cards, she was known as a, "Card Shark!"
She is survived by grandchildren, Jessica Bricker, Lori Beth Campbell, Kristin Gasser and Joe Gasser; great grandchildren, Mackenzie and Andrew Bricker; also nieces and nephew.
In addition to her parents and husband, Joan was preceded in death by children, Patricia J. Campbell and Theodore Gasser; sister, Patricia Van Horn.
