Andrew J. Vehec, age 68, of Liberty Borough, died Feb. 3, 2016, at UPMC McKeesport. Born Dec. 1, 1947, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Andrew P. and Theresa (Gromacki) Vehec and the husband of Janet (Tomko) Vehec.
Andrew was a retired nuclear technician with 35 years of employment at Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Andrew was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church. After retiring, he enjoyed a simple life of working out at the gym, washing the family cars and watching sports. During the Vietnam War, Andrew served stateside in the U.S. Army military police. When his children were young, he enjoyed coaching their sports teams and most recently, being a grandfather brought him his greatest pride and joy.

Shirley A. Furman, age 78 of McKeesport died February 3, 2016 at UPMC McKeesport. Born May 18, 1937 in Fairmont, WV, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Nancy (Shreve) Winemiller. Shirley worked for the Lemon Tree for 25 years as a cake decorator and also for Allegheny County in the dietary department at Kane Regional in McKeesport. One of her greatest joys in life were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rachel H. “Rae” Slater, age 87 of Liberty Boro., died February 3, 2016 at Senior Care Plaza in McKeesport. Born November 26, 1928 in Liberty Boro., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Thompson) Hyndman and beloved wife of Ed Slater for nearly 65 years, whom she married on February 17, 1951. Rae was a dedicated member of the Liberty Presbyterian Church for over 70 years. She devoted her time to the church having been the choir director, organist, youth director, Sunday school teacher, vacation bible school director, and clerk of session for 25 years. Rae also worked as a Pre-School teacher at Long Run Learning Center in White Oak.

Edwin A. Lang, age 90, of Liberty Borough, died January 30, 2016, at Senior Care Plaza. Born March 4, 1925, in Christy Park, he was the son of the late Albert J. and Emma (Hesse) Lang and the husband of the late Virginia M. (Baker) Lang.
Edwin retired in 1986 from the McKeesport Daily News, where he was a printer and composing room foreman. He also worked for the Veterans Administration, Immel’s and H.B. South. He was a member of the Liberty Presbyterian Church and a WWII Army veteran, serving during the Pacific Theatre.

James A. Thomas, Jr., age 67, of Port Vue, died January 30, 2016, at Family Hospice & Palliative Care. Born April 17, 1948, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late James A. and Doris (Hageter) Thomas and the husband of Karen “Kay” (Morgo) Thomas.
James was a retired draftsman, from the US Postal Service. He was a US Navy Veteran serving during the Vietnam War and a member of the Port Vue American Legion Post # 447. He enjoyed building and flying model airplanes and was an avid outdoorsman.

Russell “Russ” Daniel Jackson, Jr., age 76, of Pittsburgh, passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at home under Family Hospice & Palliative Care, with his wife by his side. He was born April 6, 1939, in the Frog Town (East Liberty) section of Pittsburgh, to Russell Sr. and Geraldine (Campbell) Jackson. The eldest of six children, he was educated in the Pittsburgh Public School system. From birth, he was an avid sports fan and participant. In his youth, he played baseball for Peabody High School, from which he graduated in 1956, also with a city traveling all-star team, and excelled to the point of garnering a tryout with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Mary worked as a travel agent until retirement.
She is survived by a nephew, David Makar of Santa Rosa, CA; 2 great nieces, Maxine (Angel) Cote of McKeesport and Amanda Makar of Greensburg.

Joseph “Joey” Zavalydriga, age 61, of McKeesport, died at his home on Jan. 25, 2016. Born July 31, 1954, in Wilkinsburg, he was the son of Donna (Carouthers) Egenlauf and the son of the late Michael Egenlauf. He was the husband of the late Denise (Yeager McCully) Zavalydriga.
Joe was a truck driver for most of his life, having worked for Casturo Iron & Metal, John F. Scott Co and for himself, Joe Zavalydriga Trucking. He had also worked for Ryco, Inc. and Mon-Valley Recycling Center.

Betty dedicated her life to caring for her family. She was a devoted Christian and lifelong member of the Glassport Assembly of God Church, where she was the former treasurer. She loved to bake and make homemade soups. Betty would open her home and heart to anyone that she touched in her life.

She was a McKeesport Majorette Drill Team Aid and the President of the Greenock Elementary PTA and she was a volunteer for the Greater Pittsburgh Soap Box Derby for many years. She was the best friend and grandmother you could ever ask for.

Theodore R. Potersnak, 75, of Liberty Borough, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at Jefferson Hills Manor. Born June 22, 1940, in Liberty Borough, he was the son of the late Michael and Anna (Ulich) Potersnak. Theodore was an Army veteran, serving during Vietnam. He is survived by nephews, Paul (Sue) Potersnak, of Port Vue, Steven Potersnak, of Austin, Texas, Richard Potersnak, of Austin, Texas, Joseph Dora, of Howard, Colo., and Robert Dora, of Elizabeth; great-nephew and godson, Robert Potersnak, of Brentwood; great-niece, Faythe Potersnak, of White Oak; and also survived by Kelly George, of North Braddock; and many other great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
