Loving husband, father, grandfather, Dr. Joseph E. Michaels, PhD, age 81, of Whitehall, formerly of Duquesne, passed away at home, on Good Friday, April 2, 2021. Born on October 13, 1939, in Duquesne, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Margaret T. (Curran) Michaels. Joseph attended Duquesne High School and joined the Navy after graduating. Upon discharge from the Navy, he attended Duquesne University and earned a Bachelor’s degree. He went on to the University of Pittsburgh to earn his Master’s degree and Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD). He was a teacher, dean, and principal for the Pittsburgh Public Schools, most recently Overbrook Elementary and he retired from Spring Garden Elementary. He was active in the Baldwin-Whitehall community in the Baldwin Manor Association, local speaker for the Whitehall library on historical topics, volunteered at the election polls and founded the Whitehall Aviation Modeler Associations. He authored 3 books on aviation aircraft and was an avid photographer who built model airplanes and enjoyed aviation photography.

Robert B. Bentz, age 82, of Elizabeth, died April 1, 2021, at UPMC McKeesport Hospital. Born January 3, 1939, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late William and Hilda (Blank) Bentz and the husband of Shirley (Gatto) Bentz for 62 years.
Robert was the owner of Stan's Transmission for 50 years. He has a passion for racing and shared that passion with his children by taking them to the track with him when they were children. His dedication to racing earned him a place in the Pittsburgh Circle Track Hall of Fame. In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, Robert C. (Janet) Bentz, Thomas J. (Nelly) Bentz, and Susan L. (Tom) DiBiaso; grandchildren, Stacy (Andrew) Stenglein, Lauren (Anthony) Boehm, and James DiBiaso; great-grandchildren, David and Evelyn, and his beloved dog Maggie.

Robert Murtha, age 90 of Elizabeth Twp., passed away on Friday, April 2, 2021 in Point Pleasant Retirement Community, North Versailles.  Born January 13, 1931 in Dravosburg, he was a son of the late John and Marie (Striegel) Murtha.  A US Navy Veteran of the Korean War, Robert was the proprietor of Murtha Trucking, Inc. and a former millwright for US Steel.  Robert was the past president of the Elizabeth Twp. Lions Club and a member of the White Oak American Legion, the Sutersville Moose, W.I.M.B.U. of Blythedale, and the Elizabeth Twp. Seniors.  He was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.  Besides his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife Shirley A. (Welty) Murtha, who passed away May 9, 2015, and his brothers Louis, Kenneth, and William Murtha.  He is survived by his children Karalee (John) Carr of Hollywood, FL and Robert J. Murtha of Mt. Pleasant; his grandchildren Meagan Knapp, John D. (Alexa) Sutton, Austin (Tricia) Murtha, and Trevor and Louis Calderon; his great-grandchildren Brooklyn Knapp, Bianca, Riley, and Austin Murtha, and Olivia and Roman Calderon; his siblings Joseph Glenn (Darlene) Murtha of Houston, TX, Timothy Ronald (Lita) Murtha of Bradenton, FL, June (the late James) Andrews of Elizabeth Twp., and James (Jackie) Murtha of Elizabeth Twp.; and many nieces and nephews.

Ernest "Ernie" Gregory Warren,  61, of Eads, CO, formerly of Elizabeth Township, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2021. He was born March 13, 1960 in Pittsburgh and was the son of Charles A. Warren of Elizabeth Township and the late Marilyn (Closser) Warren. Ernie was a graduate of Elizabeth Forward High School where he participated in Varsity Wrestling and Baseball. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed nature and the outdoors. Ernie had worked for the US Postal Service.

James John Palcsey, age 43, of Dravosburg, died on Thursday, April 1, 2021. He was born in McKeesport on June 5, 1977 and is the son of John Raymond and Dolores “Jean” Jackson Palcsey of Dravosburg.
James was a third-generation firefighter and life member of the Dravosburg Volunteer Fire Department #1where he served as vice president for many years. He also served on the Board of Control for Western Pennsylvania Firemen’s Association. He was a proud 1995 graduate of Serra Catholic High School. He was an avid Star Wars, Pittsburgh Pirates, Penguins, and Steelers fan. His welcoming spirit, gentle voice, and sincere kindness will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

John L. "Critch" Critchfield, age 72, of Belle Vernon, formerly of Clairton, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2021 at home. He retired after 35 years as an operator for Eastman Chemical in West Elizabeth. An Army veteran, he was a member of New Hope Assembly of God Church in Elizabeth Twp. where he was a member of the praise team for the past 16 years. Music was John's life — he was also a member of the praise team with Greater Works Church, he composed music, and collected guitars. Born December 28, 1948 in McKeesport, he was a son of the late Lawrence and Ellener (Edwards) Critchfield. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Sue L. (Borreggine) Critchfield; daughter, April Star Critchfield of Denver, CO; son, Seth (Ashley) Critchfield of North Huntingdon; grandchildren, Brooke, Dillon and Autumn Critchfield; stepdaughter, Bonnie (Dean) Pioveson; stepsons, Eric Castor and Jason Knowles; step-grandchildren, Naomi, Noah, Cheyenne, Chasity, Sean, Nevaeh, Damian and JJ; former wife, Marlene; in-laws; also, nieces, nephews and cousins. Anna Mae Gioia, 94, of Lincoln Boro, passed away Thursday April 1, 2021 at home. She was born June 5, 1926 on the family farm in Elizabeth Township, and was the daughter of  the late Clyde and Arelia Billick. She was the wife of the late Nicholas (Nick) Gioia. They got married on her 21st birthday and were married for 41 years. Anna was a member of Mary Mother of God Parish, St. Patrick Church, and also a member of the Elizabeth Township Senior Citizens. She worked for White Star Laundry and J & L Mill in Christy Park. She was a long time employee of McKeesport Hospital as a Messenger Escort and was a Union Steward for Local 205. Anna Mae was best known for her love of her trips to the casino and baking, especially Easter Bread and Pizzelles.

    Stephen Hugh Darrah, age 72, of North Versailles died on Tuesday, March 30, 2021. He was born in Pittsburgh on June 27, 1948 and is the son of the late Robert and Mary Alice Martin Darrah. He served in the United States Army. Stephen graduated from the University of Georgia in Communications and was employed as an electronic technician. He was a fireman/paramedic for Sunset Volunteer Firehall in North Versailles and loved animals.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Bostard Darrah of Homestead; daughters, Trisha Darrah of Homestead and Amy Good of McKeesport; brother, Paul Darrah of McKeesport; grandsons, Noah Coppola and Sebastian Darrah both of Homestead. He is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Darrah.
