Susan L. (Norris) Filer, 68, of Pittsburgh, formerly of North Huntingdon, died Wednesday February 5, 2020. She was born May 15, 1951 in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Lee and Jean (Calmus) Norris and was also preceded in death by a sister Pamela Mitall.
Susan was a caregiver in the healthcare field, but she devoted her life to raising her three children and, in recent years, “Grammy” delighted in helping to lovingly care for her five beautiful grandchildren. When not spending time with her family, she treasured time with numerous close friends, including card club, shared meals, and fun travels.
Whether family, friend, or stranger, Susan had a smile, warm hug, and kind word for every person who crossed her path. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Irwin.

Joseph Perlick-Spernak, age 25 of Clairton, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2020. Born August 25, 1994 in Pittsburgh, he is a son of Victor Spernak and Carol (Perlick) (Victor) Sporio. Besides his parents, he is survived by his son Milo Perlick-Spernak; his siblings Victor Perlick-Spernak, Carly Ogletree, and Savannah Sporio, all of Clairton; his grandparents John (JoAnne) Perlick of Clairton and Susan Woodward of Elizabeth; and also many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends will be received in the A.J. Bekavac Funeral Home, Clairton, on Sunday, February 9, 2020 from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM. A Funeral Service will be held in the funeral home on Monday, February 10, 2020 at 10 AM with Pastor Jeffrey Dillinger officiating. Procession and burial will follow to St. Clare Cemetery, Clairton.

Barbara Volas, age 84, of White Oak, passed away on February 3, 2020 surrounded by family and friends after a brief illness. She was born on March 3, 1935 in Kremasti, Rhodes, Greece and is the daughter of the late Peter J. and Katerina Cantemiry Volas.
Barbara graduated from McKeesport High School in 1952. She attended Pratt Institute in New York. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Painting from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1963 and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1967. Barbara lived the artist’s life. She held adjunct professor appointments at Western College for Women, now Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio and Carnegie Mellon University. She exhibited her work at individual, group and invitational shows throughout Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Several of her paintings and prints are part of individual and corporate collections. Barbara earned awards and commissions from the National Endowment for the Arts and Pennsylvania Council for the Arts. Barbara will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews when they would visit her home, garden and studios.

Dorothy J. "D.J." Shawl, age 81, of Jefferson Hills, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at Jefferson Hospital. She was a member of the Bunola Church of the Nazarene. Born October 13, 1938 in McKeesport, she was a daughter of the late James and Dorothy (Biddle) Neal. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, George E. Shawl; children, Jayne Ann Fowler of Finleyville, Jim (Kim) Shawl of Lower Speers, Janis (Dan Salaj) Salka of Jefferson Hills, Nancy (the late Jeffrey) Fetchen of Bunola and George M. (Beth) Shawl of Everett; grandchildren, Jason, Justin, Jarrod, James, Julie, George, Jordan and Dakota; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Jamee (Albert) Powell of Finleyville; also, nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by grandson, Steven. Friends will be received in the Paul E. Bekavac Funeral Home, 221 North Second Avenue, Elizabeth on Friday, February 7, 2020 from 4-8 PM. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 10 AM in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ronald Doran officiating. LaNora Louise (Rouse) Price passed away peacefully on February 1, 2020, at her home in North Versailles after a long illness. Born July 19, 1933, in Pittsburgh to John and Margaret Rouse, LaNora grew up on the Northside, graduating from Allegheny High School in 1951. In September of that year, she married Donald Price, a marriage that lasted until his death in 2008.
LaNora worked as an operator for Bell Telephone and as a meat cutter for Kroger’s in Duquesne but retired in 1972 to be a stay-at-home mother to her daughter Dawn.
After Donald’s retirement, he and LaNora traveled extensively, visiting England, Scotland, Wales, and Italy, and finally taking their dream vacation to Egypt.

James R. Miller, 76, of McKeesport passed away in Kane Regional Hospital, McKeesport. He was born February 23, 1943m in McKeesport, the son of the late William and Theima Miller. Jim was a retired draftman. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Donald.

Henry F. "RoRo" Straw, age 58 of West Mifflin and formerly of McKeesport, passed away at home on Tuesday, February 4, 2020. Born July 22, 1961 in McKeesport, he was a son of the late Henry C. and Genevieve (Luketic) Straw. A maintenance man at Mifflin Estates in West Mifflin, Henry will be remembered for his helpfulness, generosity, and large-heartedness.
