In his youth, he played baseball for Peabody High School, from which he graduated in 1956, also with a city traveling all-star team, and excelled to the point of garnering a tryout with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Joe was a truck driver for most of his life, having worked for Casturo Iron & Metal, John F. Scott Co and for himself, Joe Zavalydriga Trucking. He had also worked for Ryco, Inc. and Mon-Valley Recycling Center.
