Jay A. Penwell, age 68, of Pittsburgh, died August 9, 2023, peacefully at home. Born September 2, 1954, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Gayle Malcolm and Ruth (Rigg) Penwell and the loving husband of Nadine (James) Penwell for almost 21 years.
Jay loved life and was a happy and honest man. He graduated from Perry High School and then earned an Associate's Degree in Science from CCAC in Industrial Management.
As a young man, Jay worked as an Ironworker and later became an employee of American Electric Power Company. He began working at Pressure Chemical Company in 1990 and grew through promotions to become the Plant Manager. His career there spanned 33 years. He was a 33rd Degree Mason and a long-time member of Avalon Lodge #657 in Bellevue, Pa. He was a former member of Pittsburgh Elks Lodge #11 in Pittsburgh, Pa, and held titles as the Exalted Ruler and Trustee.

Carole Joan Mills King, 83, of Forward Township, passed away on Friday, August 11, 2023, at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. She was born in McKeesport on October 30, 1939, to the late Paul and Elizabeth Jones Mills. Carole was the loving wife of 65 years to George Melvin King. She is survived by her husband, George King of Forward Township, son Paul (Donna) King, of Clairton, daughters Joan (Ken) Smith, of Lincoln Boro, Laurie (Robin) Davis, of Clairton, sister Paula (Steve) Nutini, of Hilliard, OH, grandchildren, Jenny, Carrie, Joshua, Joseph, Angelique, Gabrielle, great-grandchildren Laney, Cage, Knox, Hunter, Wyatt, Bo, Nicholas, and Katie and many nieces and nephews. Carole was preceded in death by brother Jackie Mills, and beloved dog Taco. She was a member of the Lover Church of Christ in Charleroi, enjoyed Western movies, Bible study, fishing, cooking memorable and delicious meals, embroidery, making latch-hook rugs, shopping, and loved spending time with her grandchildren. Family and friends will be received on Sunday, August 20, 2023, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at S.M. FINNEY FUNERAL HOME, 432 N. 6th St, Clairton, PA 15025. A service will take place Monday, August 21, 2023, at the funeral home at 11:00 A.M. To be followed by interment at Round Hill Cemetery. Kathleen J. Carey Way, 74, of North Huntingdon, passed away Monday, August 14, 2023 at UPMC Passavant Hospital. She was born February 27, 1949, a daughter of the late Mary Lou (Carey) Leck. Prior to her retirement, Kathy was an administrator for Club 4 Life. She enjoyed watching the History Channel, listening to oldies music, spending time with her daughters and grandchildren, and loved her feline companion, Baby. She is survived by her daughters, Carrie Botkin (Brian), Connie Angermeier (Michael), brother, Peter Leck; sister, Laura "Dee Dee" Erdody (Gary); grandchildren, Joshua (Austin), Kathleen "Katie", Benjamin, Devon, Brendan; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the James W. Shirley Funeral Home, 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon, PA 15642. John P. Lucas, Jr., 87, of Elizabeth Township, formerly of Forest Hills, passed away Friday, August 11, 2023. He was born in Wilkinsburg on July 10, 1936 and was the son of the late John P. Lucas, Sr., and the late Cecilia “Tillie” (Luketich) Lucas. He was the husband of 60 years of the late Colleen (Karabin) Lucas before her passing on January 3, 2018. He was a graduate of Wilkinsburg High School and was a US Army Private First Class from 1956-1958. He worked as a technician for Westinghouse, Waltz Mill site for almost 30 years, and also serviced nuclear reactors in Europe and Asia. Prior to Westinghouse, John worked as a carpenter and throughout his life could design and build just about anything. John was a volunteer firefighter with the Greenock Volunteer Fire Dept., and with the Waltz Mill Fire Dept. for many years. He was also a long time member of the Croatian Fraternal Union, and the White Oak American Legion Post #701. An avid golfer, John also liked to spend his time camping and fishing.

Terry J. Patterson, age 71, of White Oak, died August 13, 2023, at home. Born June 16, 1952, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Florry and Margaret (Knote) Patterson and husband of Barbara (Enterline) Patterson.

Terry retired as a self-employed janitorial worker. He was an active member of Park Baptist Church in Versailles. Terry enjoyed spending time with family and friends at his camp in Confluence, PA. He used to love skiing and rafting at Ohiopyle with his children. Terry was a family man and loved his family very much.

In addition to his wife, Terry is survived by his children, Shawn Patterson and Jessica Patterson; step-children, Ashley Beatty and Kaley (Matt) Scanlan; grandchildren, Ronald "RJ" Yule III, Isabella Yule, and Gabriel Patterson; step-grandchildren, McKenzie Beatty and Kieran Beatty; and lifelong best friend, Rocco Siamacco.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Timothy Patterson.

Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Thursday, August 17, 2023, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be on Friday, August 18, 2023, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Entombment will follow in McKeesport & Versailles Cemetery.

Doris Darlene Williams, age 80, of Glassport, died on Monday, August 14, 2023. She was born in Vindex, Maryland on February 20, 1943 and is the daughter of the late Lloyd and Beatrice Knox Kifer. She was the matriarch of the family, an excellent cook, and enjoyed knitting and crocheting blankets. Doris was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps. She attended the former Lesko Beauty School in McKeesport and then opened her own business in McKeesport, Doris’ Hair Salon which she operated for approximately six years. Doris retired as a custodian from McKeesport Area School District when she was 62 years old after twenty years of service.

Lash, 94, of North Huntingdon, died Friday, August 11, 2023.  She was born May 14, 1929 in Irwin, daughter of the late Frank and Barbara (Pcolensky) Pavlik.  Prior to her retirement, Mary was a secretary for the Norwin Property Tax Office.  She was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Herminie, White Oak American Legion Auxiliary and the 701 Seniors in White Oak.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi Lash; sons, David and Gary Lash; daughter, Carol Anderson; brothers, Frank, John, Michael and George; sisters, Elizabeth Pavlik and Ann Hanko.  She is survived by her daughter, Karen Guess; brother, Robert; sisters, Helen Rizzi and Sr. Barbara Pavlik; and granddaughter, Samantha Guess.  Friends will be received from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Monday at the James W. David O. Pershing

David O. Pershing, age 93, of Blaine Hill, passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at Jefferson Hospital. He retired as a millwright for US Steel National Tube Works in McKeesport. He was a Marine veteran serving during the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart in the Battle of Inchon. He was also a catcher for the Parris Island Marine Corps baseball team. He was a past commander of the Blaine Hill VFW, a member of the Elizabeth American Legion, the Stephen Bayard Masonic Lodge, and a life member of the Blaine Hill Volunteer Fire Company where he was a past chief, lieutenant and trustee. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and most sports. He enjoyed teaching young people the love of baseball and was a former president and team manager of the Elizabeth Baseball Association. Born June 7, 1930 in Elizabeth, he was a son of the late David S. and Rose (Telesfore) Pershing and husband of the late Katherine (Barton) Pershing. He is survived by sons, David F. Pershing of Blaine Hill, Robert K. (Elizabeth) Pershing of Irwin and Mark A. (Carolyn) Pershing of Springboro; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Mark and Cassidy Pershing; great-granddaughter, Dalia; siblings, Richard and Bill Pershing, both of Blaine Hill; also, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by sisters, Sandra Davis and Lucy Thompson, and brothers, Edgar and John Pershing. Friends will be received in the Paul E. Henry “Ben” Benton South, age 80, of Elizabeth Twp., died on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. He was born in McKeesport on June 12, 1943 and is the son of the late William and Naomi Niehaus South. Ben proudly served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force Tactical Air Control Party in support of the U.S. Army 1st Air Cavalry Division from 1964 to 1968 during the Vietnam War. He was a recipient of the Air Force Commendation Medal for his honorable service in the military. He was previously employed by H.B. South Printing and also was the owner of South Software. He retired from McKeesport Area School District as a technology coordinator. He served on the technology board of numerous colleges, universities, and organizations. Ben was a member of St. Patrick's church (Mary, Mother of God Parish). As a member of the Holy Name Society, he held numerous offices and was honored by the Pittsburgh Diocese for his dedicated involvement. Ben showed love to his family and friends by giving his time freely in service as a problem solver and a helping hand. He was a relationship builder; always caring, keeping up with friends, meeting new ones, supporting his family, and giving his grandkids "the best hugs."
