Walter Smith, 89, of North Huntingdon, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2019 at RNC Greensburg. He was born August 16, 1929 in West Mifflin, a son of the late William H. and Laura (Shuster) Smith. Prior to his retirement, Walter worked as a maintenance man at Penn State McKeesport. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church of North Huntingdon, a square dance caller for 25 years and an active participant in various square dance clubs, 50 year member of Duquesne-McKeesport Masonic Lodge 731 F&A.M., White Oak American Legion Post 701 and a veteran of the U.S. Marines having served during the Korean War where he was a purple heart recipient. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Nancy ( Campbell) Smith, brother, Thomas Smith and grandson, Brian Weigle. He is survived by his daughters, Laura Burk (Robert), Karen Weigle (Jere); grandchildren, Megan (J.W.) Lattimer, Katie (Cody) Frick, and Corey (Autumn) Weigle; great-grandchildren, Kinley, Dakota and Abigail. Visitation Tuesday from 2-4, 6-8 pm at the James W. Shirley Funeral Home, 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday in the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. Interment will be private in Penn Lincoln Memorial Park. Gerald T. Dempsey Sr., age 93, of North Huntingdon, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2019. He was a World War II Navy veteran that completed an extensive course in timepiece repair that set him up for his future work and helped him with repairing friend's time pieces. He retired after over 42 years as an instrument repairman at the Edgar Thompson Works in Braddock. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing and spend time in the outdoors. He always looked forward to traveling to Georgia in the summers with his wife to buy and restore antiques with his father-in-law for his resale shop. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of over 43 years Viona "Vi" Dempsey; parents; and many brothers. He is survived by his children Gerald Dempsey Jr. of Bellingham, Washington, Eleanor Dempsey of Youngwood, Norma McCarthy of Greensburg and Philip (Colleen) Dempsey of Blairsville; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; Brother Howard; and sisters Betty and Janet.

Mary Ellen (Brush) Beres, 69, of Hutchinson, passed away December 31, 2018 at home. She was born July 27, 1949 in McKeesport, a daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (LaCivita) Brush. Mary Ellen received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s degree from California University and was a retired professor and counselor in charge of disability accommodations at Westmoreland County Community College. She was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church, Herminie. She is survived by her husband of 42 years Andrew “Steve” Beres Jr.; her children Joanna E. Beres of Hutchinson, Stephanie M. (Steven) Parrett of Chambersburg, and Andrew S. Beres III of Fox Chapel; her sisters Joanne (Lawrence) Burns of Latrobe and Janet (Donald) Rugh of Jeannette; also nieces and nephews.

He was born April 12, 1928 in McKeesport and was the son of the late Robert Taylor and Thelma Edith (Ferguson) Phillips. Bill was a member of Park Baptist Church and was retired from the former US Steel Duquesne Works. He was a member of the EBA Club. He is survived by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Jack and Richard Phillips and sisters, Mary Lou Lopretto and Helen Kalo. There is no visitation. She was born September 22, 1949 in Huntingdon and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Micheline (Menand) Giacobello. Christine was a member of St. Angela Merici Church in White Oak. She was retired from the former Fashion Bug in Olympia Shopping Center. Barella, age 95 of Rostraver Twp., passed away at home on Thursday, January 3, 2019.  Born February 3, 1923 in Roscoe, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Teresa (Lucas) Malmgren.  The co-owner and bookkeeper of the former Barella's Lounge in Jefferson Hills, Betty also worked as a seamstress and payroll clerk for the US Army during World War II.  In her spare time, she was an avid reader and loved going to her place in the mountains, but her family will remember her most as a strong and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
